Hey guys,

I'm currently in the process of planning to paint my OEM 16" wheels. 2000UZJ has a write up of using spray painting your wheels but I came up with an idea with my buddy and I want to know if anybody has done this. What we were thinking is to use PlastiDip spray as a primary layer on the wheel and then spray on Bed Liner on top of that. What this theoretically does is allows you to change the look of your wheels but you can just rub off the PlastiDip and have your OEM color back without harming the finish. Thoughts? Suggestions?

Bed liner is going to dry hard, making it a "casing" over the plastidip. If it chips, it's going to flake off very quickly and make you have to respray the entire rim. Bedliner is also heavy, so expect a lot of vibration. Why not find the right shade of plastidip and just do that?

I really want to have the textured look of the bed liner is the only reason I want to spray that on. I think I may go ahead and buy a can of each and do some testing with it on some sheet metal or something like that.

I rattlecan painted my 80 wheels, they still looked good several years later when I sold it, they looked factory to me. My 100 and 4R wheels are getting ratty, planning to paint them in the Spring. They look much easier to paint than the 80 wheels: no polished and clearcoated aluminum, they don't even look like they had clearcoat over the silver.

So a guy that I'm friends with is currently doing some accents on his wheels with just plastidip and he's going to see how well it holds up over time. I'll let you guys know how it comes out but I'm leaning towards doing a rattle can paint job.

plasti-dipped my wheels

my truck is 99% mall cruiser, but fwiw plastidip will hold up to use well, to cleaning not so much. depending on your OCD, you could be redoing in after a couple washes.

use plasti dip to try out looks you want, then if you like the look and want to commit to it, rattle can it up.

Rattle can is the way to go. Unlimited colors, textured or smooth, durable as hell, easy to touch up (if ever needed), easy to sand/strip if ya change directions down the road...

My FJ Cruiser came with alloy wheels. I sold them, bought the black steel wheels and body matched them - held up for 4+ years 'til I sold it.
