I found a 40 for sale locally, trying to get an idea of what it might be worth. I haven't gone to look at it yet, but I'm ignorant to 40's and their quirks and value. Here is the responses he has given me, and a pic.

1976 FJ-40 Toyota Landcruiser, Tub is very rusty, Comes with two new rear side panels and heavy duty steering link. Have spare front axles. Cruisr has lockers front and back. Mechanically this thing is great, the body is the bad part. Frame is good. Has rock slider and custom transfer skids. 4" lift with wrangler steering set up. Tires are 33" swamper, almost new. 2400.00 firm.
The tub is pretty much shot from the doors back but if you purchased floor panels and quarters for under the doors and a rear sill you could probably make it work. It comes with CCOT rear side full quarters. The FJ was purchased from a off road center mechanic that used it for rock climbing and has not been on the road since. It has a lockrite and an aussie locker. It is not pretty but it is solid except for the tub.
It is four speed on the floor, power brakes with disks up front. It has non stock seat and no rear seat. Has wrangler steering set up and box. 4" lift with 33" swampers. Header and weber carb. I am asking $2400.00 because of the parts that go with and the mechanicals are very solid.

Is this thing too far gone? How much money would I be looking at to buy replacement panels and put them in myself? I wouldn't want to make it look overly nice, just decent backyard bodywork.

I'd say the 40 as is might be worth 800$, then price the parts that come with it to get a total value. Replacing panels? Sound like it needs a complete rear tub (quarters, floor/bed/rear channel, wheel wells, etc.) it would be a lot of work l, look at bill's thread as well as the 40 section here ok mud. You might look at the jeep steering he did, could require more work to undo : (

But it could all be worth it,depends on initial purchase price....

no doubt there's a lot og goodies on it and mechanically sound. But his price is reflecting all the cash he has into it. A lot of that stuff is hard to get the investment back. How bad did he beat it? who did the work? I can paint but I'm no Picasso.... I see a $1500 max rig there is all the spares and goodies are real. Unless you're really hot for it. Body work is the hard part. Even if it's only to pass inspection.. most likely everything underneath is rotten. That's why it's off the road.. If you have access to a tub then it might not be to bad..... There's a lot more work there than just some panels add floors, supports, rockers...

It's tempting, I'm not the guy that has to do a full body off resto for it to be right, but that looks rotten...

Go look at it see what you can get it for.

I'd check the frame out thoroughly as rusty as the tub is. Check to see if the rear diagonal frame braces are still there. Look for rust inside the frame. Check the forward rear spring hanger (dead end) where it attaches to the frame for cracks.

I'm with Bob on that. You'd probably sink $500 to $1000 in it to get it on the road and $2500 to $5K to do it right. Seems like you could dig up something a little less molested for that kind of money and have a better base to start with. Of course maybe you are looking for a strictly off-road rig which this would fit the bill. If you are planning on getting it road worthy, it could end up being quite a big bite to chew.

Yep. Take a BRIGHT flashlite with you and crawl under & check that frame out close. You might even want to take a screwdriver and hammer to help check soundness. If that's sound, you're off to a good start. You can check Bill's work in progress for an idea of the work involved of rebuilding the tub. From my recollection, PA pours at least as much salt on their roads as does MD, and toyota steel don't like that.

The frame's where it's at. I don't think Matkins Extreme Frames is in business anymore, so that option may be lost. They made some outrageous FJ40 frames at one time.

Good luck.

Thanks for the advice gents, I think I will let this one go unless he drops the price to around a grand or less. The more I think about it I need another big project like I need a hole in the head.

Ya I just got all excited at the notion of a 40 I could afford... might be goof for parts for someone, but not at the price.

Check it out

A tub is the easy pasrt, as far as frame rust, take a RUBBER mallet and bang the crap out of it. Any Seller cannnot get ticked at you for bashing a frame with a piece of rubber, if that is the case walk away. ANY complete 40 on the NE with a solid frame is worth looking at and making a sensible offer.
