what's this and can I do without? Don't have access to a LJ-78 wiring diagram:-( I'm moving the door controls from the right door to left door as part of my left hand drive conversion. Everything moved over except this what looks like a rheostat and I can't take it apart and flip it to fit. It hooks into one of the door lock arms so it must tell the Door controller box something, but why is it not on all doors? The picture is looking back to where the door lock/strike is mounted inside the door. I'm inquiring about the black wire bundle that goes to the white plastic thing, there are 3 wires connected to this thing.
Thanks.

It is the door lock control unit. There's wiring in the driver's door that goes to all the other doors. If you're doing a swap, you should consider moving it to the other side of the vehicle of you want to retain power locks.

I swapped all the wiring harness out of the japan drivers door with the japan pax door to make a left hand drive drivers door and left hand drive pax door. This is the only piece that does not swap. Without this piece will the electric doors still work? Is this piece the same on other model trucks? Will/does this piece exists in a FJ-62? or FJ-80? If so would it be the same? If I can't find a replacement what does this gizmo actually do in the scope of things? Does it unlock/lock all doors by using the key?
Thanks.

Ok if you are looking at the white round item that has the red, black and green wires coming out?
Cause if it is I have just had to fix one on my wife's Toyota Estima van..
It is a switch which when moved by the key will signal the doors to unlock or lock.
Being the master door position it is the only one with this.
The only other way to replicate this could be to get an after-market central locking system and install it.
Wiring it in the the door lock control.

in the past couple of weeks I have developed a problem with my locking system.
From the drivers door key I can unlock all the doors but when I lock the door I only lock the drivers door.
I took apart my door and checked the connections and it did not fix the problem.
Though the day after I did that it they started working properly again.
Now the problem is back as of last night. Its driving me nuts.

Anyone run into this?

Yes its that little round switch......They get worn out...or break inside...
As I have just fixed my wife's Estima....(Had a battery going flat issue and door locks playing up)
It has a little contact inside which wipes across some flat circuit type tracks. In my case the contact had come adrift and was floating inside... some times it would unlock all doors and sometimes not...
There is a mid point in the tracks where it sits and makes no contact...
On occasion it would stick on the lock position and drain the battery (so I found out)
I fixed it by re pinning it with a tiny screw from a glasses repair kit...

Thanks for the heads up. I'll take a look at it tomorrow.
I am assuming its the plastic one in the photo with the wires going into it.

ForealBoreal if you look at the first picture more closely you will see a white arm to the right and on the end of that arm is a little pin that fits into the rod that the key moves when you lock/unlock the door with the key. Mine is a little stiff and it has been in the garage for the last 6 or so years so I can imagine if this thing was froze down how hard it would be to move or even break the arm or pin. If you find yours broke I can sell you mine:-)

Yup... three wires, white plastic

Will do if I can't figure out a home fix.
