Yeah , knew that .... but wasn't sure what to call the other pickup .

let me find pics ....

Either I didn't look hard enough on Toyota.com , ro they aren't making it anymore . I was referring to the old plain jane pickups they had ... I thought that they had still made them concurrently with the tacos ... maybe I was wrong .

T

ah i think they still make them or used to. My buddy has one small tires limited suspension, and no frills. Stilled called a Tacoma, just not an SR5 with bling trim :)

The truck previous to the Tacoma was simply called Toyota Pickup. It was that way from 1979 to 95. There were a few 95 model pickups made before the mid-year intro of the Tacoma. The 95 pickup is a carry-over from 94. Before 79 it was a Hilux (69-78) and before that a Stout.

For lack of a better pic right now ... this was what I was thinking of VS the taco :

Did the Taco evolve from this ? Or is the above truck on a smaller frame ?

The Taco evolved from that...

I am sure CDan can elaborate more, but...

What you have is the regular toyota pickup made from 1989-1995. The Tacoma changed or took over the old pick up. The pickup you have redesigned, etc. New engine, new body. The Tacoma is actually 1995.5 and newer

I am unsure if measurements and what not are different. But I know the major items changed were:
new v6 (3.0 to 3.4)
new body
new front susp (a arm & torsion bar to a arm & coil over shock)
added elocker (1997 and newer??)

1995 was the last year for that model, effectively a 1994. torsein bar front suspension, leaf rear, 3.0 V6 available. I owned one. That model look ran from 1986 thru 1995....1985 was similar but with solid front axles. V6 showed about 1990 I believe. 2.2? 4cyl was other option.

1995-1/2 was the start of the Tacoma with the 3.4 V6 and a coil front suspension. 2.4 four was other option.

The two models were not run concurrently

2.4, 2.7....underpowered either way ;)

my 1995 3.0 was adeqate....towed a 6000# load for as much as 900 miles a number of times, finally replaced the factory clutch at 154,000 miles...

...damn cheap Toyota stuff, thing shoulda lasted 175k at least before replacing...

The 2.7 was rated @ the same horsepower as your(and my) 3.0 :)

hey, that one there is a hilux, and they still make em for aus. the taco is bigger i think

Tyler, Tacoma is coming out with a new model this October. Totally redesigned. It will be a midsize truck.

i noticed your midsize in usa is our large... i heard someone that was on exchange from the states call a cruiser a "midsize SUV" and i'm talking 80 series here, not a shorty

80 series cruiser falls on a full size suv category. It was just one of the smallest. :D

like i said, too big....
