OK, this is a minor question, but it's driving me nuts and I can't find any correlation to anything...

What is the number in the little MUD logo in my browser tab? It changes randomly.

I love this feature!! It's how many new/unread alerts/messages you have. The number is cached from the last time there, so it will change accordingly based on if you have read all of the alerts/messages. For example, if you have read them all, that # will not display. But if you get a PM and you do not check it before you close your tab, it will update to 1. It will show 1 until the the next time you visit mud, and then update again to whatever that current # is.

I don't have 22 of anything here, let alone unread alerts... Now it's gonna drive me even more crazy trying to figure out how to get it down to zero.

It's an aggregate, you don't have your inbox and alerts = 22? If you do not, that's odd then and I don't have an answer. As I type, I have 1 unread PM and 3 Alerts, so that # is 4.

My Inbox is currently at 3, and Alerts says 121. Now my number is 24. Maybe the counter on the logo can't go over 100. But why do I have so many Alerts? And how do I get rid of them?

Some of these alerts are on threads that I don't recall ever reading, and I certainly haven't sub'd.

You can modify what/how you want alerts from Alert Preferences. If you mouseover the Alerts tab, it will show your alerts but then the count is removed.

What browser/OS are you using? I am using Chrome on a MBP

It tracks new posts in "watched" threads. Default settings will automatically subscribe (or watch) a thread that you have posted in. It did not work like this with the old forum software. At the top of the forum page is a link for Watched Threads and Watched Forums. That number will change based on all of your unseen conversation (PM) alerts, watched thread/forum alerts, etc.

Re-implemented this a couple weeks back, seemed to run without issue...then over the past few days, it again caused a problem. Simply, an open 'MUD browser window would ping the server every 10 minutes to see if there were new Alerts. Enough users leave multiple windows open, and leave them open ALL the time, that those pings were overloading the available connections. We bumped that number from 10,000 to 30,000 and that alleviated the 503 errors (mostly), but even after 5 days, SOME of those browser windows are still pinging.

Developer has a new update pending, it's in Beta right now...will likely test with that when available. Ideally, it is added to the usergroup Preferences options and be offered to Supporting members.
