I can't remember what it is called.
Hard, durable plastic folks use for skids, hawse fairleads, etc.

Anyone?

Anyone know a source?

Thanks.

UHMW

Small quantities from McMaster-Carr or a really big cutting board from your local store. Search the phone book for a plastics supplier if you need more (like 4x8' or larger sheets).

ultra high molecualr weight,

Great for skids, poor for fairleads.

We get 4'x10' sheets for work from our local bearing house.

How much do you need? We used alot of it up @ school (engineering projects), I have some smaller chunks left. There are a couple sources here in SLC, the stuffs not cheap.

Unless you run synthetic rope.
Synthetic rope will heat up the UHMW and cause it to deform. It sucks..

UHMWPE

Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene

We use this material a lot at work as it has excellent properties including low friction and biocompatible for implant use:D

The synthetic winch cable is made out of the same stuff.

Ohh, none really.
Thinking out loud, wondering about weight savings in synthetic winch ropes, big belly skid plates, etc. Don't really have any plans.

Thanks for the offer though, Kurt.

Depends on the rope, some are some aren't. Heat is an issue which is one of the complaints with winch rope. The temp it fails at is low...

In real life the UHMW fails before the winch rope because it is causing the friction then leaving. Winch rope drforms the UHMW fairleads very easily..

weight savings are negible with the support it needs. You will save a bit, but not that much. the really nice thing is how quiet it is sliding over rocks..
