nicw thing about the LC is you get both

Not to totally hijack this thread but I have a related question.

Living in Arizona it is rare that I encounter snow. The last time I drove in the snow and icy road conditions was a good 6 or 7 years ago.

We are planning a drive up north in the next week and I have virtually no experience with snow and icy roads. Any tips? Is full-time 4wd a benefit in these conditions?

The biggest thing to watch out for IMO is stopping in slippery conditions. The all wheel drive works so well that going to fast and not being able to stop on time. I don't use my CDL unless the snow gets to be about a foot deep and I need the extra traction.

RavenTai, I dont think LC have both for what i know only Hi & Lo while the 4WD system is part time engage& disengage gear.In snow or icy condition you cant run 4WD up to 30miles perhour ( otherwise it'll get burn )

Effectively when the center diff is locked the 80 is running like a standard 4WD system. With the center diff open it's fulltime 4WD. So Raven is correct, it's really like the best of both worlds.

Anyway didn't we just cover all of this in another thread just the other day? The 80 is great in the snow just don't get over confident because your braking's not any better.

I like the full time 4WD for on road snowy driving. It's nice and stable with great traction, and has no problems in corners.
I've driven my 80 in snow a lot and when I hit the center diff lock switch to lock it into *regular* 4WD it pushes hard in turns.

IOW: I turn the steering wheel but the truck goes straight.
It's not bad, but I think the Viscous Coupler makes for a much better on road system.

Endless;

The FZJ80 has (with CDL switch & Pin-7 Mod):

- CDL Off & High Range (Daily Driving) = AWD
- CDL On & High Range = 4WD (same as part-time 4WD in high range)
- CDL Off & Low Range = AWD
- CDL On & Low Range = 4WD (same as part-time 4WD in low range)

You can drive any speed in either low / high range - AWD / 4WD  4WD HI-Range speed is generally limited to terrain, and low range speed is governed by gear ratio ;) Long before those two factors - common sense comes into play

One of the best advantages of AWD is the ability to maintain control in changing road conditions like your picture. Better traction / control in rain, snow, ice, sand, etc., and with a good driver - you can get quite far before you need to engage 4WD, then Low Range 4WD. With the "Pin-7" modification, you can run in AWD low for better torque distribution, traction, etc in snow / ice while maintaining the vehicles rear-end while cornering / pulling your boat out of a algae covered ramp, etc.

The 80 series landcruisers have the best of both worlds - AWD & 4WD!

Not so. 80 and 100 series are full and part time. The open center diff allows for FULLtime 4WD. Locking the center diff take it to PARTtime though speed is not the issue. Then, shifting to 4-LOW (either with center locked or unlocked) simply changes the ratio.

AWD usually is the "lebel" when a full-time 4WD vehicle doesn't have a 4-LOW transfer case. A vehicle is AWD or Full-time 4WD or REALtime 4WD simply because it has a device to:

Send power to both F&R axles while also allowing for them to turn at different speeds when needed (like cornering).
or,
Send power to one axle and if slippage occurs then engage power to the other axle until traction is regained.

The best alternative is a center diff because the system is working 24/7 though there are MANY system sout there.

In ice and snow........can't beat a 2000+ 100 with open diffs and ActiveTrac. My 100 moves in the ice where my 80 spins out of control. The ASC also helps you to not skid. The dang system just works!
