Too far north. Too far east.
Wow. That's amazing.

That guy needs new underwear of course. Lighting struck about two houses down from me a month or two ago and I felt the ground shake.

What's cool is when you hear the click a fraction of a second before the boom - I think it's an electromagnetic pulse that causes metallic (ferrous?) objects to shift - definitely noticeable though if you're close enough...

Hope I'm never that close.

You probably have been but just never noticed it. I never did until it was pointed out to me. Growing up on the Rio Grande gorge rim we got it a lot - lightning even melted my parents' chain link fence in the back yard... You can probably can hear it when lightning hits the rim across Lava Bluff Drive from you.

x2

The guys at work told about a 4runner that was towed in because it would not start. After about an hour of chasing blown fuses and fried wires someone discovered the radio antenna was toast. I believe the vehicle was covered under warranty and received a new wire harness, ECU, antenna and radio. $$$

I wonder how my neighbor feels. He was welding in the back yard one day and has he turned around lighting struck in the back yard. I said he was able to see the lighting flowing through the ground with his helmet on. He said it was one of the coolest things he has seen, but he got knocked on his butt about ten feet back. I wonder if there is time enough to soil your shorts then. Not that I want to find out.

Now you know: The tires ARE NOT the reason it's safe to be in a car during a lightning storm.

Considering that a bolt of lightning will travel thousands of feet across air (not very conductive) a few inches of rubber insulation is not going to stop it from finding the ground. But that large metal cage to conduct the electricity around you and to the ground is quite helpful.
