My wife and I are planning a trip out to the Maze District of the Canyonlands in March. The LX450 is bone stock and rather un-supplied for the time being. I'm wondering what people travel with in terms of gear - the won't-leave-home-without-it, gotta-have-it, and the nice-to-have-along stuff.

Our primary objective for the trip is backpacking so we'll have the camping gear for all of that.

Hand winch
Air compressor
Recovery Kit
Spade/Axe/Hi-Lift
First-Aid/Survival Kit
Extra Gas (Big $$ to get towed out of Cayonlands)
Plenty of water
GPS/Maps/Compass/PLB (Personal Locator Beacon)

That's all *my* personal must haves. Canyonlands is very remote. You'll run into a fair amt of folks in March, however it's best to have what you may not need, then need what you don't have. Have fun!

I carry a basic took kit (sockets, wrenches, screwdrivers, etc.), replacement belts, an assortment of coolant hoses, a fuel filter and an air filter. I also carry extra engine oil, brake fluid, anti freeze (or water), ATF. These are in the truck all the time. When I'm going off road, I include most of the stuff from Voodoo's list, plus a tire repair kit and tire irons.

exstended tool kit . what ever you can take with you. shovel. saw. machete. fullsize shovel first one is a mini job . couple strips of carpet maybe 4 foot long foot wide just lay on rear floor. if you have to lay down it something to lay on. and beleve it or not get stuck in some sand or in the snow lay the carpet down slide under the tire and drive out. booster pack for jumpstarting vehicle charging cellphones running laptop whatever.

.

WOW ... So far, A lot of great "must haves" for a trip like that have been mentioned, especially the portable power/jump starter.. a dead battery is one of the most common yet easy problems to fix.

I would also add a good tire repair kit (such as SafetySeal, etc..) and if you are venturing off the beaten path, one of those 4 ft steel pry-bars from HomeDepot , I have been able to repair washed out sections of road and remove very large boulders/debris blocking my way on recently damaged or less-traveled trails.

Of course, if I could only carry ONE item in there with me, it would be WATER WATER WATER :D

Have a great trip !

Shiner!

I'd substitute a CO2 rig for the compressor on voodoos list, just my preference.
Assuming you have standard camping gear on board anyway add to his list:
A few of MRE's, the 2000 cal mil spec type. One of those can feed me for a whole day.
A space blanket, good for treating shock etc.
A few 55 gal trash bags, just because they come in handy for a lot of things and take up little space.
100' of parachute cord, always useful when camping.
Bailing wire and duct tape, what you can't fix with one you can with the other.
An assortment of sheet metal screws, wire nuts, and other small hardware items.

All of this stuff will fit in a fat 9mm ammo can.

Total agreement. Plenty of water plus plenty more water.

For a hand winch I like the More power puller.

My wife pretty much made me get a PLB and I see where they are coming out with one that only weighs 2 oz.

On my last trip to Escalante Monument I punched a really large hole in the radiator of the rental Ram tough Dodge Durango and had to get towed out. Owwwwch, that bill hurt.
