Hey guys, a few weeks ago I noticed some smoke coming from the left/rear wheel area of my 100 series, after a short drive in town. It kind of smelled like burning grease. I visually inspected all around the area but didn't see anything that seemed out of place or any leaking fluids. Since this incident, I have driven the truck several times and never noticed the smoke again but do sometime get a faint whiff of the odor I'd noticed before. Anybody have any clue what might be causing this or what I should have looked at? It's a '99 with 308K and has been well maintained but she's getting pretty old. I recently had the front bearings replaced. Are there rear bearing that I should also have replaced and could that be the problem?

We have this happen at work a lot when replacing the rear rotors, if the hub seal isn't set "just so" it'll allow gear oil to get onto the rotor, then when the brakes heat up the oil "burns" off and smells like hell.
Fix the leak, heat the pads, oil burns off, smell stops.

My money is on you having a leaking axle/hub seal on the real axle.
Yes there are bearings back there. If it turns, it must have a bearing.

I would agree with the rear breaking and or seal. I just recently had the drivers side bearing a seal replaced and as it leaked it would periodically smoke. Of course mine also had a visible seat from the axle tube!

Whens the last time you greased the drive shafts? They could be slinging onto the exhaust.

I had faint smoke coming from the driver side rear through the spokes for a little while. Found out it was flung grease that was cooking.
