OK, folks, I'm still learning and I'm reading conflicting info (ain't the Web great?)

1. Looking at a 100, I see 2 cats right after the engine (about under firewall), going into what looks like a big ole muffler midship, culminating in some sort of smallish round device at the end of the pipe (next to spare). I guess the cats are to reduce emissions using a platinum catalyst. I take it the big one is a "muffler" meaning a device to reduce sound in some ways. That correct? What's the rear gizmo for?

2. Is the arrangement similar for the 80?

thx
Eric

1. It's a resonator.
2. Yes.

A useless coffee can just waiting to get dinged up. ;)

Eric,
If you are really interested then do a Google search on Heimholtz Resonators. It's a physics principle that uses specific sized cavities to deaden sound.

It's definitely waiting to get smashed. See pics of mine that were posted a few months ago. The resonator barely survived but the tip of the pipe didn't.
