just got spray paint from a brand called Septone, its a rust guard in matt black to paint my frame and other assorted bits, i dont know if you get it in the US but its popular over in oz, i guess ill see how good it is after a couple of years.

I dont think that the brand of paint is that important. What matters the most is how you prep the rack. If you really want it to last have it blasted and powdercoated, otherwise you need to really sand and clean it, primercoat it and then paint it.

If you plan on keeping it for awhile and or using it often I would definitely powdercoat.

I agree with the PC, but for rattle can- "Rusto has the gusto" prep it well and you'll be good.

While powdercoating does look great, a mediocre paint job goes a long way too.

When I bought Sandy back in 1999 she had a confer rack that had been sitting around in Monterey CA (coastal, foggy) for a few years. After light wire-brushing and two new coats of paint, it did great for us for a few years (including a year of travel), then it has been sitting by the garage in Northern CA for a few more years... and has some surface rust but nothing serious.

The rack I'm running now, we got it used (was at least 3 or 4 years old) and havehad down here for 3 or 4 years, sitting outside and has been repainted once with no prep work (just washed, left in the sun to dry, rattle canned black). It has some rust, but nothing that an hour with a wire brush wouldn't fix.

I guess that the moral of the story is that if you repaint every 4 years or so, yoru rack could well last longer than many other parts on your truck.

Of course, if you have more cash than time, getting a pro to sandblast/powdercoat is probably the *best* finish you can get for your roof rack.

hammerite..

2, $4.00 cans and you are done.

Or buy the brush on stuff and never have another issue..

Rustoleum is really really good. Get the kind that you can spray directly on rust (rust preventative), and there is no way that you'll have any problems. If you get a chip or scratch, you can spray the same color right over it and never notice the difference.

There is a paint store in the hayward area that color matches if you want it to match the cruiser. They can make you a spray can with any color. I like industrial Rustoleum or Hammerite.

home despot here carries professional grade in gloss black, plus probably other colors. not a fast dryer like krylon, but seems more durable. the rattle can man --jim

I used Zerorust once and liked it. Hard to find though.

x2 .... have been very impressed and pleased with the ease of application, coverage, and durability of this product.

have also had good success with the Rust-Oleum's automotive line of paints
