What year axles will fit

I have a late 72 fj40 and recently found 2 more in a junk yard 1 has disc brakes the other does not will the axles just swap out from the disc brake one? I do not know the years but will have that info today. Thanks

I have a 72 as well and just did this swap, I got a later model disc axel from another member here and just bolted it in. (well after I rebuilt it, and painted it.) Only problem I had, if you can even call it a problem is that the bake line locations are different. So grab the lines from the junker if they are in good condition.

Your 72 probably has 4:11 gearing while the disc brake axle has 3:73, if it's not an earlier axle converted to discs. Search the tech links to confirm this, I think there's a link that tells you what years have what ratios.

Unless its been changed by a PO, in the US anyhow, a cruiser whether drum brake front end(early-9/'75) or early disc(9/'75 to 12/'78) will have 4.11:1 R&P ratio. rear axle ratios follow same timeline. After 12/'78 all FJ40/55/60 were front disc in the US and had 3.70:1 R&P ratio's...

If you swap the whole axle, don't forget about your pinion flanges.
