thanks, and does anyone know if there is any lift with 60 springs in the rear compared to the stock 40 springs? my 79' 40 I bought seemed to have a spring lift in the front but not in the rear, the rear seemed to sag quite a bit , heres a pict

Hi All:

Gulp! A, *interesting* body work on that rig!

From the pic, it appears that the front has a shackle reversal, which will typically net two inches of lift, while the rear end looks to have stock-length shackles (it is hard to see.) Most folks run longer rear shackles to help lift the rear to compensate for the shackle reversal up front.

Regards,

Alan

The bolt on style SR's add ~ 2" of lift. That design is pretty much lift neutral..

Got any pics of the rear shackle hanger?
Or the front one for that matter??

There is a bunch of interesting suspension stuff there. More pics would be better.

I think I know that rig !. Wasn"t this in Long Island, NY before?.
just seems a bit different !

JAmes !, there you go. great guy, and a good firend .
That truck is in good mechanical shape ! and has a lot of potential !

yah james is a good guy, the truck has already gone through some great upgrades, longfields, hubs rebuilt, beadlocks, 39s pitbulls, metaltech roll cage, nose guard and stinger,
tube bumper, new suspension seats, 4x4labs high steer, and still spending, heres a pict

Dude. what's up with the rear shackle hanger? It looks like the stock one is gone and u have a shackle bolt going right through the frame. Get longer shackle or get a new hanger. that should help you to level the truck.

well went wheelin yesterday , some easy stuff. brought the wife and kid. everyone had a great time till i tried this sandy hill climb almost made it and snap no more rear power to the wheels.. rear axle locked up tight, no forward or reverse, come to find out the pinion shaft sheared in half and fell back into the diff. not a fun afternoon getting the trailer through jersey barriers that i had to move , and also a $100 ticket for simple tresspass water co property.took the third out today and it looks rough.. How much can a Detroit locker take? going to need ring a pinion gear set also. some one told me I can take a third out of the front of my other forty and throw the locker in it , is this true? figure it would have no miles on it compared to the rear....capt

Ya there is a plate welded to the frame and the hanger goes thru that, Adding a spring hanger would probably do the trick

yeah the front and rear diffs are interchangeable.

Hi All:

From looking at your pics it appears that a "PO" swapped-in older 4.11 ratio coarse (ten) spline R&Ps into the rig.

Yes, you can swap the front diff (third member) into the rearend, but I'd suggest either buying a new set of aftermarket 4.11 gears (which will be fine-spline) or source a 1988-90 FJ62 or a 1991-92 FJ80 third member - these have 4.1 ratio diffs and will fit into your '79 rearend housing.

Alan
