What would you pay for these trailers?

I found a couple trailers and have been trying to figure out what a fair price would be to offer the guy.

Your are looking at a Korean war or earlier M100 and a Vietnam era M416, both 1/4 ton trailers. My experience, depending on the rust, for both are in the $400-$800 range each. The M100, if in good condition may be worth a little more as they are becoming rare. The military vehicle restoration folks can give you a better idea of that. As both appaear relatively untouched, either one would be a great purchase if the price was right. If you can get them both for a good price, you may be able to keep one and then sell the other for more than you payed for it. My guess is, if the owner knows what he is looking at, you can expect him/her to be in the upper end of that price range. Although they have some interchangable parts, the trailer tubs and frames are differnet widths. Just my thoughts

If there all original...my guess would be 300-400 for 416 and 400-500 for the m100...now if the lunettes have been hacked apart, or paint is hiding something...that may affect the price.

Depending on your local economy it may be more or less valuable.

Good Luck, Pat

M 416 = $ 300 - 400
( ^ has little or no collector value, but is cool for a wheeler/builder as it's interior dimensions are slightly larger then it's previous cousins)

M100 = $ 500 - 800
( ^ still of interest and sought after by the WWII collector)

I'd choose the M416 if I had intentions of hacking in a tailgate,
and wanted the most interior storage available in a military 1/4 T trailer. ...JMO

and well... if you just gotta hack up another M100...

that'll just make mine... worth even more one day ;)

The M-416 is the one I want since I want to make a camp trailer with a roof-top tent. The guy who has them want's $1000 for the 416 and $950 for the 100. I spoke to him a week ago and he wantet $1500 for the 416. I haven't had time to go look at them but plan to this week.

That's too much. I got mine for $300 (granted it does need some minor work).

He must be smoking crack!

That is a good looking 416 from what I can see... but $600 tops if there are nio flaws not shown in the pic. Personally I would not pay any more for the 100 than for the 416.

I have one of each and use them hard and often. They are great trailers. But no way in hell are they worth that.

When I first talked to him he wanted $1500 for the 416 claiming it was all original, but if the 100 pictured is the same as the one sitting next to the 416 then I'm afraid the tongue has been altered on the 416 also. I hope to get the opportunity to go look at it on Monday.

If the tongue has been altered and you want it back to original specs the parts will run you ...

$30-50 for new chains
$135-185 for a new lunette ring
$75 and up for a new lunette casting
$35 and up for the landing leg casting
$35 for the landing leg plunger and spring
$45-50 for the landing leg
$20 for new grade 8 nuts, bolts & washers

You can use this to hammer him down since it has been hacked up. It won't regain its collector value until these things have been repaired.

I am in the midst of doing this to my trailer right now so let me know if you need help finding parts:)

My comment about $600 tops assumes that it is in fact all stock and in good shape. And that is $600 TOPS!

Any alterations or damage brings it done. I have bought 3 416s over the years and even here in Alaska I paid $300-$350 each for them in pretty darn good condition.

I paid just over $400 for my M416 here in AZ and was happy to get it. I haven seen one for sale cheaper. Most that were even close were in bad shape.

Last summer a I bought a MBT for $400 that is in original shape minus the combat rims and tail lights. Both have the lunette for the pintle hook. If I found another one around here for $400 I would buy it. $600 around here is a easy sale for one in good shape. The last clean M416 I seen on CL was listed for $1,400. That guy I think must have been smoking crack but $600 not a bad price for a original in good shape.

Thanks for all the responses, I'll take some pictures when I go look at it tomorrow and get back and let you all know the condition and if he'll take the lower price.

Well I went and looked at the 416 today and it looked pretty good. It had some surface rust and was all original with the lunette up front working hand brake and original wiring. The bad part was the guy is hard up for the 1500.00 he's asking. I didn't think it was worth that at all. I figure I might pay 1000.00 for on if it looks like it just rolled off the production floor but not for one that is in need of disassembly and sand blasting and paint. I guess I'll keep looking.
