What would do about this roof rust?

isn't a replacement lid like 3k? So 900 labor but 3000.00 for the lid?!? ouch. Mine has the same - let me know if you find a better/cheaper solution.

I think I have a couple of more just like the one I pictured, this one is sold but if someone wants to drive to Bonham to pick it up we could get you one off....... :D :D

Looks like a new roof would be the best.

I had one bad spot on mine, so I cut it out (about the size of a dime) and the wirewheeled the entire gutter. Only found a couple of other spots with surface only.

I did the repair, and then applied new body seam sealer to the whole thing, primed it, and blended to match. So far so good, underside of mine is perfect. I even put the chrome strips back on, as it made it 20 years the first go around, I should be able to get that much more out of it.

Good luck. I spent about 30 bucks in materials, and about 10 hours to do all of that because I was paranoid there would be more. I was lucky.

That Sucks!

That really sucks! If you are interested, I have a 60 that I am parting out. I'll cut the roof off for ya. Or better yet, come out to Colorado for a vacation and take the roof back with you :)

my roof dint look half as bad as that but, I wire wheeled the crap out of it and put umpteem layers of paint on for it to rust thru agian...Sorry to say but your roof is a gonner...either get a new lid, make a soft top, or wheel the crap out of it.......I chose that last option....the rain gutters work well as tree sliders...

You should use naval jelly on the spots after you wire wheel (I prefer flapper wheels myself) to get rid of all the little hidden rust in those pits. Remove the naval jelly, degrease, hit it with spot putty, sand and prime. :)

I'm actually moving there for the winter, but I need to get this done before it snows :)

Where are you moving to in Colorado? It does not snow too much where I am. If it does, it usually sticks around for a few days and then it's gone. Replace your roof out here! I want to use up all of this 60 that I can.

Then Colorado may not be your best choice! No snow here! The ski areas have been struggling for the past 5 or more years. A lot of the snow is man-made. Sure there are some areas that have ample amount but not like they used to.
I live 30 miles outside of Aspen and the weather is much different just in those few miles. If you really want snow, move to Alta, UT. My honest opinion.
Good luck to you and let me know if you need a roof.

I had the exact same problem .. heheheheeh ( nothing new )

Do they actually make a soft top, or is that a custom job?

my fj60's roof is clean; bought the truck in Arizona. but my fj62 bought here in miami has three rust bubbles; damn IT!

Well I was unable to source a roof locally. The plan right now is to wirewheel it all the way. Then I'm going to lay kevlar and epoxy and then bondo. Sand and paint it white.

I still vote tree sliders...I hope you save the truck. but it looks like its rusted pretty bad and that water hasnt been leaking anywhere good.

Well I would be inclined to find someone near you parting out a 60 and go there and chop the roof off like texas had and do that. Or wheel the hell out of it, make a stout roll cage, and put a sweet waterproof soft top on there!

cut the top and get some water proof speakers...cause ya need tunes when your sitting in the rain.

It's a shame that somebody doesn't make a fibreglass replacement for the roof. It would eliminate the rust between the spotweld seams, and the panel could be made to the standard shape or a Landrover Discovery style.
Plenty of the 60's have the rust above the gutter here in Oz.. there's gotta be a market!
