I am curious to hear what you have to say. Mine will be seatcovers and mats.. BUT THAT DOESN'T COUNT.. so what I'm leaning towards is OME 3" suspension lift med-hvy (possibly with Blistein shocks rather than OME though).
If you haven't already replaced your floor mats, be on the lookout for custom-cut mats that are super resistant to stains, dirt and odor. I have some prototypes in my FJZ80 that work amazingly. Send me an email if you want to be notified when they come out in September: mike.guggenheimer@milliken.com.

Cdan you forgot number 1. Open up the center console to see if a full size 1911 wil fit in it. If not either 1) modify the console, or 2) buy a commander model. :D :D :D :D

Again, depends on intended usage.

Daily driven primary vehicle: Baseline ALL maintainence and equip with appropriate tires.

multi purpose vehicle: as above with more agressive tires.

Trail vehicle, as above plus:
#1 Agressive tires, 305-70-16 (a lift is not required for tires of this size)
#2 Sliders
#3 winch and suitable front bumper to mount same
#4 lift, on the order of OME 850J/863
#5 Rear bumper/tire carrier like Slee or comperable
#6 Lockers, if you were not lucky enough to score a vehicle already equipped

Full size fits, remember?....:D

Heck, I can fit a 60" Hi-lift across behind the seats, so surely a 1919 would fit too, right?

Should be no problem.

Do go to 864's tho so you can pack enuf ordinance along tho..........

My order was:
Tune up and rebuilt front axle, tires, lift, arb bumper, skid plate, winch, and then sliders. If I could do it over again I probably would have done the sliders close to when I put on the lift because they are pretty important if you wheel and want to keep your rig at least semi decent. Oh and I also would have gone with the J springs if I knew better but oh well. Otherwise I like the order I went in. :D

Oh and by the way I have a 60 inch Hi Lift and the only way I can fit it in the truck is by folding down the rear seats. I would love to see some pics of your setup because I can't find a place to put the damn thing with my seats in. I don't have a rack to put it on and don't have the money for a rear bumper yet so any suggestions would be cool.

hmmm....
good idea!
How about if I mount it on the roof rack and use the sunroof as a belt feeder?
How about that for a first mod? No more guff from H1 owners... ! :D

Thanks for the info. So will a FZJ80s brakes not fit in a 15" wheel? I guess it's possible--but I find it hard to believe that all FZJ80s have 16" aftermarket wheels... I think I'll get working on the CDL like you mentioned!
Probably should check with those folks with aftermarket wheels. Unless they have very little backspacing (~3-1/8" or less) the wheels will be 16" or 17" (most people running 37" tires are on 17" rims). You could ofcourse have more backspacing and put in a 1" spacer which would work, but then you have the whole spacer nuts loosening, etc.

I fitted 15x10" steel wheels with 3-5/16" backspacing onto my '97 LX, the rims fit on the front, fully torqued they would spin without hitting the calipers, but would not fit in the rear, needed ~3/16" more clearance. So if you got some 3" backspacing 15" rims they would probably fit, but your tires would be way out there...cool look but the tires will not 'stuff', they would just go up and hit the flares.. :D

Thanx for the good info. Saves a Noob like me from a lot of headache :D

First purchase is a TLCA membership :D

Being my 80 would be driven mostly by my wife as a daily driver, my first mod was the ARB front bumper for protection, then lift, then tires (purchased all within a week). I am still working on sliders and other mods for my driving :) - but got most important safety mods taken care of for our needs.

I agree with cdan though, your first mods should be focused on your intended use for your 80.

I forget things like that. All I know is a p239 and HK USP Compact fit fine. 1919 should fit fine accross the rear seat, the stand collapses. A buddy of mine has one. Fun toy, but expensive to shoot.

SUSPENSION, you can't enjoy the ride if your sea sick...

don't know if this counts as stereo or what but when i get mine my first mods will be a new head unit and Ipod adapter and a CB.

I asked an open ended question. I am not asking anyone what they think MY first mod would be. I am asking what YOUR first mod would be.

1st I'd make sure that all maintenance services are up to date.

2nd would be, Tires!!! Tires!!!! Tires!!

no brainer!
first is good tires. Everything else is secondary.

I disagree.

First thing in any vehicle is brakes.

Bought the Beast in August 05. Within the first two weeks: I had all the fluids (oil, t-case, tranny, diffs, coolant, brake) changed/flushed; U-joints and birfs greased; hoses, belts, and brakes checked (including parking brake) and State Inspection. Ordered both the Haynes and FS Manuals for my truck as well as Weathertech mats front to rear. Then I replaced Dueler H/Ts with BFG AT TAs (stock size) and did some wheelin' (probably mild to some of you animals, but pretty heavy for me). Then I had the broken exhaust mounts welded. No, I did not break them, but the rattling and banging on the trails clued me to their presence.

Baselining my rig is priority ONE! But I do have plans...

Now that I have had time to get through alot of the FAQs and a myriad of searches here and BITOG plus alot of time with my nose in the manuals, I have changed the engine to Mobil 1 w/ PureONE filter for 5k then Blackstone for UOA. my BL list is (so far) as follows:

  • Birfs/front axles
  • All synthetic lubes
  • Front engine seal
  • Oil pan gaskets
  • Rear engine seal (probably)

I was thinking about a new audio system:confused: but Crutchfield says they don't have a fit for my stock speaker placement. so ...
I want to at least replace the factory speakers. But I'm the 3rd owner not counting the small indy dealer I bought it from (he SAYS his wife drove it for a while) and I do not have the security code for the stereo. My local Toyota dealer says I have to let them take the unit out so they can read the number on the back to get me the master code  $$$.

My after BL mod list is:

  • Cats turned or replaced w/ less prominent models
  • Protection - T-case skid plate, sliders, Line-X on flares and lower body, Bumpers.
  • Move spare to rear
  • More fuel capacity! Second tank? Bigger primary tank? Both?
  • Suspension - Small lift, heavier springs for weight of tanks and protection
  • Winch
  • Power inverter

I am strictly  and I live in a friggin' duplex w/ a short gravel driveway, but I do my research.
