My first mod WAS added leg room

My second mod WAS mounting the mag light under the driverside door handle

My third mod WAS dash board cup holder

My fourth mod WAS tires, suspension and truespeed correction

and so on....

start with neccessity and then weave in the mods as needs require to help keep costs down, and then just start blowing cash on the damn thing.

Again, depends on intended usage.

Daily driven primary vehicle: Baseline ALL maintainence and equip with appropriate tires.

multi purpose vehicle: as above with more agressive tires.

Trail vehicle, as above plus:
#1 Agressive tires, 305-70-16 (a lift is not required for tires of this size)
#2 Sliders
#3 winch and suitable front bumper to mount same
#4 lift, on the order of OME 850J/863
#5 Rear bumper/tire carrier like Slee or comperable
#6 Lockers, if you were not lucky enough to score a vehicle already equipped
Very thorough answer.. I After reading yours and some others I'll go through whatever paperwork I get with the rig and make sure all the fluids are up to snuff... check the brake pads.. check the spark plugs and wires.. basically do all the routine maintenance to make my baby last the long haul..

I think this is the best and most intelligent answer to your own question.

If it is any consolation, I've had mine since August of 2004 and I am just getting around to feeling comfortable with the performance of the vehicle.

Preventative maintenance, especially with a cruiser that is new-to-you, is key I think.

All fluids should be exchanged out and new ones in--whatever your choices may be (dino/synthetic, etc.), even if the dealer/previous owner said they did it, or if the paperwork says it's done, I'd behoove you to do them all yourself, so you know what's been done and what's in there.

After that, I'd say the following:

Complete tune-up (plugs, wires, cap, rotor, PCV/grommet, air filter)
Belts
Rad flush--new Toy red in.
All fluids (oil, xfer, diffs., tranny)
A/C system (since it's summer now)
All cooling system hoses
PHH

Once you've done this, I'd also make sure that the front axle is taken care of...wheel bearings/birfields.

Then I'd say the rear axle as well.

Then, I'd go with Alvaro's suggestions--some armor (specifically Slee's xfer case skid plate).

Then the CDL switch.

After one year, I'm just getting around to the lift: OME Heavy, with new brushings, new tie rod/relay rod, tie rod ends, new extended brake lines;

Hope this helps...everyone's given you some good suggestions here.

best.

Baseline fluids and all componenets. Fix/adjust/replace anything worn beyond service limits. For the first mod I suggest if it will EVER go off-highway sliders should top the list. Sliders can be expensive but they are cheap compared to rocker/door/cat damage!

My first mod to an 80 would be new suspension, with a 4" lift.

Then tires, ARB............etc......

I look at it as what will get me on the trail the fastest. Ground clearance.

Rig purchased! I found a deal on a set of used 33" tires with good thread and beadlock rims for $500. Looks like that might be my first "mod". Might be a while before they get on the rig as I think I will have to lift it first.. but I don't think I can pass up the deal. And yes I will be sure to do all routine maintenance first!!!

used 33's and rims will also likely be 15" and not 16" like the stock 80....good luck on them fitting....

my first mods were the correct radio antenna, the CDL switch, the 7-pin mod, adding additional 12-volt outlets, and the "long leg" bracket adjustments....

I have sliders under development, and tires picked out, may order next week.....also gonna correct the speedo with one of the electronic gadgets to keep the shift points correct...

First mod was 305/70 SSRs. It actually looked and worked pretty damn good with no lift and the big rubber. Next lift, sliders, ARB front bumper, TJM rear w/ tire carrier. In that order.

If I were doing it again I'd still do tires first.

First thing was to baseline it. Then because it needed them, new tires, followed closely by Slee xfer case plate then suspension, yada, yada ,yada

I love how all you guys think that base lining your fluids is a MOD.

Compared to most of the zombies on the road, changing out fluids is a modification. Even amongst my friends I am one of the few who even know what a diff is, let alone that it has oil in it.
So yes, I do consider baselining fluids to be a mod. Its good for the truck and can cost a couple hundred depending on what you use.

Thanks for the info. So will a FZJ80s brakes not fit in a 15" wheel? I guess it's possible--but I find it hard to believe that all FZJ80s have 16" aftermarket wheels... I think I'll get working on the CDL like you mentioned!

Say....
What is tthe CDL switch that you speak of?
And while your at it, please tell me what those George's LED are, and where i can find them?

Thanks
Kent

I would like to start with changing the tires and wheels that came with my LC. Right now, it has dunlop radial rovers at and wheels that look like welds stone crushers (authentic?). Size up to 285s if I decide to keep the rims. Really want the OEM wheels but expensive. I have a brother in-law that has a set of 2003 Sequoia 5 spoke Hyper wheels (17'), I might be able to snag for less than $135. Will these fit without modifications? Lifts and such will probably be next year.

To my limited understanding.. the CDL mod is a inexpensive switch you can hook up to use as a Central Diff Lock.. as far as George's LEDs... I suggest searching on the forum... I've seen them noted here and there and my curiosity is piqued as well...
