Hey guys. I am planning to drain my tranny fluid soon and I really don't know what kind of ATF to get :( the FSM and dip stick said Dexron II but I don't see a Dexron II at the auto parts store.. the guy said that Dexron II is discontinued coz it was old school I see Dexron IV, Mercon, Type F etc.. but no Dexron II.. I don't know anything about ATF because this is my first time doing tranny fluid change.. So what other good ATF can I get that is compatible?

Thanks in advance.

Lots of threads on this if you search. Dextron II is an old standard and had been replaced with Dextron III which has been replaced with Dextron IV. Then at some point they stopped with the Dextron thing and went to something else. I lost track.

I've been using Amsoil synthetic ATF for the last 10 or 12 years or so. I do a drain/refill once a year.
Other's use both synthetic or analog oils. If you plan on doing several drain/refills to passively flush the system, synthetic can get expensive. I think all of the modern fluids are better than they used to be, so you'll probably be OK regardless of what you choose.

Somewhere on here Cary gave a whole dissertation on Dextron ratings and compatibility. It's a good read.

x2 on Valvoline Dex/Merc. You can get it in gallon jugs for about $16 each.

Allison Transynd! I havent put it in the Cruiser yet but have used it for years in the Supra and the race car...

I run a Castrol ATF....it works.

Thanks guys... I see that Castrol Dexron IV works too.... I think im gonna try it.. but im not 100% sure yet..

I am Amsoil convert(used in systems that require oil). Recently had shop w a BG machine do the swap. Worth the investment IMHO

Sent from my DROID3 using IH8MUD. typos extra

Will this satisfy? I used this for my power steering flush.
When reading it says do not use when called for dex V1 says it's a blend..

It worked wonderfully in my power steering so far. Looking to do a trans fluid drain and fill.

Dexron is backwards compatible. So any of the fluids marked Dex II, III or VI will work.

Wonder why it says do not use calling for Dex V1. It's the cheapest thing they have and I plan on doing the drain and fill method between oil changes until I get all the old fluid out. It says it's a blend. so got me wondering..

Yes it'll work. It says no IV (4) because it's backwards compatible, not forward. That'll work if it calls for I, II, or III.

I'm running red line high temp atf, which has a thicker visosity, it seems to help those hard shifts into 3rd.

I am having a problem with my 92 fj80
it won’t shift until it warms up.
my cruiser has not had the atf changed since i had a complete tuneup in 2006
The cruiser has been garaged since then, only very infrequently starting it up driving it around my property and then putting it back in the garage. Until last year when I started to use it again it sat for five years without even starting it.

it has a total of 103,000 miles.
my question is : does automatic transmission fluid go bad?
and could this be the problem with my non-shifting cruiser.
also I am planning to drain the pan add new fluid and repeat a few times to replace old as much as I can. Will Dextron 3 or 4 work?
