I was driving down the highway this morning, when my automatic transmission oil temperature light came on. I was doing between 110-120 km/h. shortly after that a loss of power and lots of white smoke billowing out the back. pulled over to the shoulder, got out and noticed a huge oil slick behind me. looked underneath and there was oil pooling under the engine. all the other indicators- oil pressure, engine temperature, etc. were all in the normal range. the only thing that was not mormal was the automatic transmission oil temperature light indicator on. What could it be? something major or something minor?

James,

You may have cracked your torque converter. I have seen a small hairline crack that has made an auto tranny puke before. Also consider a seal may have failed. You should probably pull the tranny out and get it looked at. The oil temp light probably turned on to warm you of fluid loss and possible raised temps due to a lower level of ATF. Consider pulling your skid plates off, and pressure washing the transmission and tcase. Then do a visual check underneath while the vehicle is running. Look for leaks throughout. :wrench:

Good luck,
Cheers.

Take some pictures and send them to me. monkey4040@hotmail .com

it's sitting in my mechanics yard, so i can't get any pics. once i hear from him, i will post on here.

but in the back of my mind, if it's something expensive i may not fix it, but instead sell it. so i'm really hoping it's not something major.

If need be I can do repairs to your truck for a lot less then what shop rate would be. If interested let me know.

Thanks,
John

If it comes down to it, I have a spare a440f in my garage..... It's set up for a 3FE, but I think swapping the valve body and torque convertor would make it a suitable 12HT tranny.

It it spray fluid out of the tranny, the dipstick tube, or one of the cooler lines?

Thanks RockDoc,

I'll keep it in mind if that's what it needs. I should find out this week what the problem is. the oil was coming out of the bottom of the truck, right around the driveshaft.

the news about my truck

just got off the phone with my mechanic,

worst case scenario is that the transmission pump is shot and that would have to be replaced- Dan at 4 wheel auto quoted him ~$1400 for the pump, apparently it has to come straight from toyota, they don't make them after market, and then also all the gasket and seals. total bill about $2500

the "what I'm hoping it really is" scenario is that the gasket, o ring or other seals is leaking and that has to be replaced.

So, Canadian Bum.........do you have a transmission pump on that 61 that you are parting out? and if so, how much?

I'm calling him back tomorrow to either start work or not.

My 61 is a 5 speed and I'm using the powertrain for my 40 sorry.

well, that sucks for me.

I gave my mechanic the go ahead to start fixing it today. you might see me be begging outside of the next act pub on thursday to pay for it!

i'll keep you posted.
