Hello Everyone

In the course of removing the waterpump I managed to snap two of the M6 bolts. I was lucky enough to have enough thread on one of them to use a stud remover, but the other one snapped off flush.

I tried drilling it in place but that is not working well.

The only way i see to properly drill out the hole is to remove the timing cover.
I have already removed the radiator, fan, and water pump.

This brings me to the questions.

1.) Do i only need to remove the crank pulley and the timing cover bolts in order to remove the timing cover?
2.) Are all the timing cover bolts accessible from the front?
3.) Do i need to remove the front crank oil seal?
4.) Does the timing cover gasket need to be replaced? paper/reusable rubber?

Right now this is my DD so i need it fixed ASAP.

Thanks for any advice.

1) There are 4 oil pan bolts that go into the bottom of the cover, plus the pan is sealed with FIPG (Form-In-Place Gasket) sealant. There is another bolt in the top, under the cam, it's hard to see as the head of the bolt is sitting in a puddle of oil. Finally, the top of the cover is sealed with the head gasket. Verdict: it's a pain to remove and re-install unless you pull either the head or the oil pan.

2) There are several bolts that go into the cover from the back side. If you have air conditioning, the bracket has to come off too, it is bolted to the passenger side of the engine.

3) The seal is held in place in the oil pump, which is separate from the timing cover. Any time you pull the front pulley you should replace this seal (IMO).

4) Yes, it is a paper gasket, and it will get destroyed when you pull the cover off.

i know it is a bummer but at least you will know that it has been done.

and i will say it once again.IMHO buy a new crank pulley (harmonic balancer) if the engine has a lot of miles.

If you're removing the head make sure you remove the head bolts in the proper sequence, this can prevent head damage, once the timing cover is off look at it to make sure the timing chain has not worn into the metal, if it has you should replace it. If you go online to a site called engbldr you can find good parts, best is he bundles parts in kit form and has free shipping. Nothing about this job is hard, just time consuming. I would not bother with going to a double row chain set up, this will cost you more money, many of 22RE engines with the single row chain set up have run for 200k mil with out braking. Oh and stick with Toyota brand gaskets, it is not worth saving money for the off brand stuff you get from advanced auto or any other parts stores. Use the factory service manual for torque specs and reassembly procedures, there are some places that you will need to use sealant (permatex ultra gray only) or the Toyota brand ($$$$$$). Good luck!

Yes, I bought that kit for my son's 4Runner, it was a great set for a great price.

that is a good price. i bought the one from lcengeneering, was the gears and chain from toyota?

everything in their kit was from toyota but the guides.

I don't think so, but it was quality stuff.

thanks for the info.
One of the somewhat local cruiser guys donated a timing kit to me from engine builder. Now i just need to order the headgasket and headbolts.
I got the valvecover off today and took a look at the timing chain and guides. I currently have the plastic type guides and they look to be intact.
I'll be looking at the writeups this weekend and scrolling through the FSM.

here are some before and after pics...

does that include the metal guides?

I think so, I know I got metal guides from them, can't remember if I asked for them or it was part of the kit.

You don't have to remove the head, you can just remove the 2 bolts.

I have an OEM head gasket as well as a head. PM me if you are interested. I got the head with some other parts a while back, I went with a new head from engbldr rather then take my chances, the head has been resurfaced but I've no clue as to weather it has been checked for cracks, it is complete with cam and valves. Let me know if you are interested. Big issue with 22RE heads is their age, they are pronned to cracks due to corrosion and years of heat cycles.
