What OBD-2 protocol do 80-series use? ('96 same as '97?)

Trying to come up with a cheap obd2 interface to a computer. I have borrowed one from a friend that does VPW and ISO protocols, it worked fine. However the bareboard ones I have seen only do the ISO protocol.

I also found out that some people say that many '96 vehicles (LX450 and LC included) used the VPW protocol, however the '97 and newer models of darn near everything use ISO protocol. Can anyone confirm this?

To add to the confusion, I read on another obd2 website that the '97 LX450 uses ISO but the '97 LC uses VPW. I seriously doubt they are different but since the connector I've been borrowing does both, (and I don't have it right now to see if I could force it to one to see if I could determine that), I don't know if it's worth buying a board to make a ISO compliant interface...

Thanks,

Off hand Mark, I don't know. But I did find this when looking this stuff up for my own records... HTH...

J1850 VPW--The connector should have metallic contacts in pins 2, 4, 5, and 16, but not 10.
ISO 9141-2--The connector should have metallic contacts in pins 4, 5, 7, 15, and 16.
J1850 PWM--The connector should have metallic contacts in pins 2, 4, 5, 10, and 16.

OBD-II connector:

looked at my 96 LX it has connectors at 2 4 5 and 16, making it VPW?

found this pinout, small and hard to read but you can get it

I must have inadvertantly deleted the image... Should be working now...

Mark,

According to the information at www.obd-2.com, 95-97 uses VPW, 98 and up uses ISO. Also, the same connector can be used for multiple protocols. The one I have uses a single connector for PWM, VPW and ISO.

And my 97 LC also has the DLC populated at 2 4 5 and 16 = VPW.
