ive just replaced my exhust pipe, what type of muffler should i run on a 76 2f i dont want any thing crazy loud, something in the med range.

Flowmaster makes a nice offroad muffler covered in black diamond plate.I run one on mine sounds pretty good not too loud.

I ran a factory toyota unit, it's nice & quiet. I've had loud mufflers on all kinds of toys old vw's motorcylces corvettes etc etc. Nothing sucks more than having your brains beaten to death by a loud pipe, especially in a vehicle built like a tin can. My engine makes more noise than the muffler which is really nice with a soft top or with the top off. Driving the truck is much nicer than in my old Jeep with flowmasters.
A higher flowing muffler will give some engines more horsepower but remember it will come at a price often too, namely a reduction in low end power. Backpressure is required for low end torque in most engines. I too often did not take this into consideration when adding a muffler to a vehicle and lost low end grunt. So my choice was not only made by the noise factor alone when it came to my 40.
I remember saying" If it's too loud, Your too old", now all I say is "WHAT? WHAT?, I can't hear you!!" :):)

I think I paid 90 buck for mine which went from the tailpipe to a 90 deg. angle behind the driver side.

I just got a thrush alumnized / welded online for $29.99. I shall have it installed sometime in the next week. Hopefully it sounds better than the rusted out cherry bomb that has nearly broken off, Matt

i was initially looking at going with just a cheap, as quiet as possible walker muffler. did some research and talked to a few local exhaust guys and found out that the welded steel flowmaster's were the way to go for offroad. it's not all about sound, they're built to last through tough vibrations. i decided to go with the quietest flowmaster 50 series and haven't regretted it. i've heard some guys that run the 40 series saying that the noise gets annoying after a while.
