hey guys, I recently got the idea in my head that I wanted to do a N. and S. America expedition. I was originally planning to sell my 2wd Jeep WJ for a 4x4 XJ but after more research determined that I might run into some problems sourcing parts in So. America.

This got me looking into Toyotas, and then specifically Land Cruisers. Now I am hooked.

I am very new to the fold and trying to learn as much as possible, I have determined Diesel would be optimal however its hard to come by a fairly stock diesel landcruiser in the US. I have been looking at mid 80's to late 90's US FJ60 and FJ80s, but I am still learning the difference in the years transmissions, engines, and various drive train parts.

My budget is 4-7K for a vehicle, if I spend on the low-end I can invest in mods, the higher end would hopefully be modded.

What would you guys choose? Both seem to be great vehicles, would the electronics in a FJ80 pose a greater complication for a long journey? Also what would be the best year, engine, tranny combo for something like this?

There's a thread just down the page on almost exactly the same topic. :o
Several responses there already.

In your price range, I would buy a 1985-1987 FJ60. You can likely find one in very good shape with some of the mods that you would want for your trip like a roof rack or Old Man Emu suspension or 5 speed trans upgrade.

thanks guys, i have been searching and reading other threads and over on expo portal as well and learning tons

i am mainly interested in the different engine/tranny combos offered over the various years. Did the FJ60 and FJ80 only come with 1 combo in the US?

check out this FJ60 w only 86K miles on the clock

thanks bud, i saw that truck as well, wish it was a bit closer to me, though a planeflight to LA is only $70 or so bucks from here :hhmm:

I'd say that's avg for a 91-92 fj80, it has the fj62 3fe motor so it's a bit of a dog, but you do get coil suspension. If you want an fj80 I'd stick with 93 up, 95 up seems to be best with the 1fze engine and option for lockers.

other I would avoid the 3F and much more the 3FE engine coz are not really common down here .. the 2F still common and you will found good amount of parts ..
