Would anyone care to explain how you figure out whether oem lug nuts or those aftermarket sort of inset lug nuts will work on an aftermarket wheel?

Im looking at the granite alloy ga640 wheel

The manufacturer of the wheel would be the best source of this information.

Tire rack says conical seat lug nuts are called for with these wheels.

Is that what 200 series land cruisers have? Or are they ball seat lug nuts? Or something else?

Stock 200 wheels are washered…but not conical. Rock Warrior Wheels many here use (myself included) DO have conical washers, though and definitely worth avoiding anything without washers.

Some conical seat have a very very thin face though. Again, the wheel manufacturer will be the best source of information on correct lugs.

Either way markuson is right.. your stock lugs are washered.

Generally the aftermarket rims require the lug nuts you'd use with rock warriors. If the actual mating surface for the lug nut is inside that hole then you'll need the other lug nuts.

Some wheels require different designs, even if they are conical.

Like these:

Example: Alpha equipt require extended thread (ET) lugs like @bloc pictured above to get enough thread of the lug on the stud.

Tire rack also shipped the correct ET lugs with my wheels (I got 5 wheels), not sure if they include lugs that in all purchases.

I couldn’t find any washered ET lugs.

I did find longer studs, they were $9 each, sourced from Japan. You could then use the McGuard spline lugs with washers adter replacing the studs. Didn’t do this.
