Hi all,

Recently purchased a nice 2013 LC200 and it’s fantastic. But there is a small part/wired remote under the driver side dash with a light and a single button. I traced it back to a black box mounted up under the dash. The box has a small Phillips head pot with a (min) and a (max). Looked over both of them and couldn’t find any brand names. (See pics)

My guess was a remote start of some sort due to a green wire/antenna that hangs off the box. A bundle of wires have been routed to/through it. I appreciate the help! And any advice on what to do with it after ID.

Thanks!

Well, that mystery was short lived. I searched online for something like “weird button under dash” instead of LC/Toyota specific searches and found out it’s a KARR aftermarket alarm system. Seems quite a few dealers use them then try to sell new car buyers a “secondary alarm”... stupid. I hate finding altered wiring harnesses that I didn’t do myself, especially if it’s connected to the starter

It could also be a switch for the speed sensor/ nav bypass to access menus while the vehicle is in motion.

Oh Chit! Do not rip it out just yet. Track down each wire and see how did they tap into the harness and what module is connected to, most likely they use scotch lock to splice into any wire coz it's the easy way Do Not Remove the scotch lock from the harness just unplug the aftermarket wire from the black box there is a good chance you will cut the wire if you remove the scotch lock. A lot of time is they cut off signal to starter or tap into the factory alarm look for wires that are cut and bypassed, individually remove wires and try starting the vehicle and let it run until you are satisfied that it did not trigger any lights or shut the engine off then go to the next until you got all the wires unhook. You can also just leave it in there if you like but eventually it will create a problem down the road.

Thanks viper,

I ended up tracing all of the wires (and learning how to disassemble the lower dash) to disconnect them. Luckily, the installer used cheap T clip splices, so I left the crimp on the wire and just unplugged everything. I made sure each wire was still fine with no breakage, and finally checked vehicle operation. All good and cheap alarm out.
