What is the red button for in front of my shifter?
I thought it was a second gear lock out, but it does not seem to do that.
Then I thought it was a torque converter lockout. I tried hitting it going up a pass and it doesn't really make a difference.

Does anyone know what its for?
I have a 1990 HDJ81.
The button has a sticker on it with japanese so I can't read it.

Thanks,
Nick

Its not a ect switch is it?

thats the one that lengthens the shift pattern.

Nice looking truck. WHy don't you post some pictures of it up in this thread for us all to see your new ride.

Are you gonna do some anti theft hidden swtiches?

It could be a ECT switch.
I will try that later when driving around.

I will post some pics of it later. I am going to wait for my ARB to come in (two weeks) and then I can put it on along with my Warn winch. I am really happy with the truck. Pics will come. I promise.

I am going to put in a kill switch of some sort.
I might get the alarm the Michael it Rising sun was talking about.
It's $1100 installed. But its a alarm/imobalizer/remote doors/remote start.
I could also install it myself.

The first thing I did when I bought it was get two clubs. One for the steering wheel and another for the peddle. :)

Cheers,
Nick

The red button in front of the shifter is indeed to release the shifter when key is out or whatever.

I'm pretty sure any ECT switch would be labeled as such. In my truck it's clearly marked.

Congrats on your new rig, Nick. We'll have to hit the hills around Cranny this spring - as soon as I get my new head on!

Hello Robin,

I am excited to see your truck.
I can't wait to do some wheeling with you.
Then we will be able to compare a 78 and 81 first hand.
What type of tires do you have?

Cheers,
Nick

That enables hyperspace...don't push it in traffic or you'll ruin your ARB bumper.

Ahh, the hyerspace drive. I should of known that.
I will need to get my long range sensors up and running.
I could run into something pretty quick at those speeds. :)

Hmmm...a triple-locked 81 vs a 78 open front and rear...let's stick to the tight trails with lots of closely-spaced trees, shall we?;)

Tires right now: Crappy Dunlop 215s, if I'm not mistaken. Not long for this world.

Cheers,
Robin

I thought that if we compared, we would do it without lockers.
Open diff to open diff.

Tight trees huh, you will undoubtably have the edge.
I was thinking more general trails and snow.
You might want to get some new tires before hand. I love my BFG's.
How big are you going to go?

I can't wait to try out that hyperspace drive.
It would probably work pretty good for towing people out. :D
Do you have the hyperspace drive in your 78?
Would could try to drag race at light speeds.
Probably do the 1/4 mile in like .0000003 seconds at like a million miles an hour. :) :)

Cheers,
Nick

Yah I've got hyperspace...Use it wisely, though, because the EGTs go through the roof! I think the PO was using hyperspace drive unwisely and that's what cracked my head...

Anyway, I'm thinking 31s. It's gonna be a family car, so you know how it goes.

warp nine

Raise your right hand....I hereby swear not to engage hyperspace while around any Jeep aliens so as to not interfere with their current existence.

UH 235/85 R16....you are 16 inch eh?

it will look rocking on there and will only be an inch bigger in dia then the 31's

its my faz size on any vehicle. ;)

Don't even bother with any other size. It will fit I am sure. Eh Wayne?

Kind of off topic with this here hyperdrive issue...
BB, I am planning on a set of 235s for my FJ60 and I have noticed how much you love those tires. Would you happen to have any detailed pictures of them on your car besides the ones on this site? Thanks!

So I tried the button again last night.

It does not allow me to shift when parked or without my foot on the brake.
Nor does it act as a ECT. My shift points stayed the same the whole time.

I wonder what it does?
Maybe it's broken.

Right now my best guess is a tourqe converter lock. I will have to test this once I tow a trailer.

Cheers,
Nick

So it was indeed a shifter release.
If you hold the button down you can move the shifter without being on the brake.

Thanks for all the help.
Cheers,
Nick

??

am i confused.. or what is this actually good for?

It's good for tow truck drivers and the repo man . . .

Also when you have a dead battery and you want to move the vehicle out of park
