I bought this off an employee of my dad’s. In 1998 or 1999 in Soldotna. Been part of the family since. build was started late 2000s. Never done. Always working on it as they all are. Brother who had it last went down in a small plane a couple years ago now. Finally getting it back to the shop so I can bring it back to what he wanted it to be/it was.

that was the one i was thinking of, i remember that crash. will be a dandy when you finally get it done. what engine is in that one
 
i need some advice, i looked on the net and my head is still spinning from different suggestions over the years. anyway, when i had my rear driveshaft depart from my 40 at 70 mph it broke the rear flange. i have a new one and figure on replacing it this week. no leak from the seal so i'm planning on just pulling the nut replacing the flange and putting a new nut back on. my question is do i count threads and tighten the new nut to where it was or do i torque it. if so to what torque value. the pinions is pretty tight with only very slight up and down movement.
also, i need to replace the seal on the output of the tcase. any suggestions on what sealer to use to put around the new seal so it doesn't leak out of the ebrake. don't suggest right stuff, been there and never again. also torque value on that nut would save me the effort of looking it up lol. for one more time guys, check your driveshaft nuts and keep em tight
 
4Runner has a 3.4. Did that one around 08. Runs great. Just been sitting for a couple years. It’s been used well. Then not unfortunately. Got to get it back to user friendly.
 
@elkun1, I am assuming on your model 40, that you have a solid opinion spacer that is shimmed for preload. If that’s the case, then you should set the preload by initially torquing to factory spec to see if the current pack works. Then, shim as necessary. If you know you have a crush collar in there then I would probably mark the nut and count the threads. But, since you’re changing the flange you have to be concerned about any machining differences between the new and old flange. However, you shouldn’t have any up and down play even ever so slight. The transfer case should just be torque to spec and have no play when you’re done with that. As far as the pinion seal, I’ve never had a Toyota one leak installed correctly, which is basically clean the housing surface of burrs and drop it in about a millimeter below the outer height. Pack the backside spring with grease. If you want a sealed one, I think you can buy a national or SKF that comes with a seal on the outside ready to go.
 
no leaks on the rear, if an ear hadn't broke off the flange i wouldn't touch it. around 15 thousand miles of pretty heavy use plus pulling my camper most of the time since rebuilt. the up and down movement is slight but definetly is there. the tcase is where the beating took place with the splined end beating on the exhaust and crossmember. after the field repair and no vibration that i could feel the trip continued to 2 more lakes. so it went a couple hundred more miles. no leaks until i pulled the driveshaft from the ebrake. it's leaking around the output shaft itself which has been known to happen before. I believe Darren is going to stop by and i'll get his opinion before i start on it this afternoon.
 
took the tires off and spun the rear end, what we all thought felt like a little roughness in the pinion bearing was the brakes slightly rubbing the drum in one spot. went ahead and pulled the bearing and it is still in good shape. life is good, went to re assemble it and they had shipped the wrong pinion seal. otherwise it would have been back on the road this evening. oh well, i'll order another plus a new gasket for the rear cover and it should be ready for a weekend run. tomorrow will be seal up the tcase day and change oil so should be ready when parts show up to put it all together.
