Well, because I don't have enough going on right now... I decided to pull the front axle out. See, I had a couple of small dents in the housing from some rock collisions, so I started pounding those out under the truck laying on my back. BTW - thanks to MonsterJohnny for loaning his Map Gas to get this accomplished. Then I was trying to fix the drain plug bung - which was really bunged, from dragging it over rocks.

After already have the axle nearly stripped to pull the 3rd, I figured why do this crap laying on my back. So, again, borrowed some JackStands from Johnny, because mine are supporting Jerry's Expo trailer while I'm borrowing his tires (picking up on a them here?) - and I pulled the front housing.

While out, I decided I'd add some beef to the front pumpkin. Pics to follow.

You can see what I had to do to get a socket on the drain plug...

Sadly, this took me like 5 hours or so today - it's amazingly tough to try and get 7/16" steel to form to an axle housing with limited tools :D

More to follow as I progress-

I hear you there Jerry, I wasted the whole day replacing an intake gasket only to find another intake leak :mad:

Terry did make it over and his truck ran much, much better after adjusting the valves though, so it wasn't a total wash.

Ramon, you use that torch to heat up the steel to make bending easier? That looks very similar to what I did on my housing.
 
Glad to hear about the success with Terry's truck! Were the valves way off? Enough to give crappy compression numbers?

Sorry to hear about your intake Johnny - I'm going out right now to see if I can easily put my eyes on my old one - may be tomorrow when I can get dirty (to tired to change clothes tonight :) )

BTW - I cleaned up the pics some, since the iPhone / flash doesn't play real nice w/o some edits.

The valves on Terry's truck were a bit tight in places and a bit loose in others. What we both think was happening is that the exhaust valve on #2 was too tight, therefore it could never close. We took a compression reading on #2 right after adjusting the valves and got 80 psi, which is much more than the 0 we were reading two weeks ago. Yesterday he drove it around and he said it felt better, so we'll have a final verdict after this week.

Ramon, have you considered shaving your diff while it's out? You could gain a solid 1" of clearance and never worry about a drain plug again.:grinpimp:
 
Sounds like good times! Im woried about my front diff drain plug too! Bought new ones from sor. Waiting to hamom till I pull it. Ramon I will be in touch need to talk about this hi steer stuff.

I don't think I have the cahones to shave it, to be honest. I have considered welding the plug in place and using the stud to drain it. Only problem I see with that is the small bit of fluid that would really tell and "tales" will remain trapped in the diff. That, plus since I had to drain it via this method this time, due to the plug being stuck, I found out it takes several hours for it to drain. :doh:

Several hours? Holy crap. Even when cold it shouldn't take that long. That may be an indication that your breather is stuck, unless you had your inner axles out already.

BTW, what length shocks are you running? 12''s? I've been working on my cruiser pretty heavily (high steer, traction bar, cage tie ins, and front hoops w/ long travel shocks). I went w/ some 14s w/ trail gear hoops and I'm certain after a test run, I'm going to drop down to 12''s...
 
Hey Fish - yeah, I'm running 12's. I probably use about 10" of that since my tie rod hits my frame on full compression.

I went out of town just after Johnny and I did the valve job, so I haven't had a chance to really run her, but she sure as hell sounded better. No pulling on the exhaust, like she did at the barn and didn't stall, or want to, on the entire ride home. Of course, she now seems like she has a tranny issue, but we'll see...
