What Gear?

OK, I know this is going to be a very stupid question but here goes.

What gear should my 96 80 (unlocked) be in when I start tearing down to front hubs to replace brake disks and pads?

I've not worked on a 4 w/drive brake system before and noticed that they do not turn when in neutral but turn when in park...when the front end was on stands.

I just set parking brake, left in park, put on stands, braced the rear wheels and did the job. Am I missing something more here?

The wheels will turn opposite directions on unlocked axles whether it is in P or N or any other gear. It is also possible to turn them the same direction in N, but there is usually more resistance and they prefer to turn opposite directions when you turn one wheel.

For locked axles that are in locked mode, the wheels will turn the same direction only in N and not turn in P.

Same for the rear too.
