What is the most suitable engine oils to use for a Toyota B, 2B or 3B engine? It has obviously some high mileage on it. Would mutigrade be the most suitable or do I switch to Synthetic, fully synthetic?

Thanks for your input.

My bj 60s i use shell rotella 15w40 buy it by the pail and change it out every 5000km synthetic is $$$ and i dont think they even had synthetic these trucks these came out!

I put Rotella T6 synthetic in but that's only because its the only oil I keep in the garage. It's getting expensive to the point I am thinking of switching all the trucks back to Rotella 15-40.

In a tropical climate with an older engine I would be using 20-50. And being an older engine that requires oil changes at 5-6000 klms, I wouldn't be using synthetic as you will just be throwing money away.
It doesn't matter which brand as long as its not that cheap rubbish you see in the supermarket.

If you have any small oil leaks they might become bigger using synthetic.

I run synthetic in the winter and Rotella 15w/40 in the summer in my 3B. I usually use Rotella T6 in the winter but have used Amsoil's OE 15w40 synthetic as well. (The Amsoil OE line of diesel oils has been discontinued.)

I noticed recently that Shell has been branding their non-synthetic Rotell (15x40) as T4. Is that new-ish? I wonder if there has been a reformulation or is it just new packaging?

Noticed the same thing but also packaging has changed as well. They also have the T5 synthetic blend that I haven't tried. Since Home Depot has expanded their automotive section I have been buying T6 for $21/gallon. Cheapest I have found lately.

Thanks fellas... Will stick then to the Shell 15W-40 multigrade. Cheaper and I suppose the same oil used back in the day forbthese engines. It's the Shell one in yellow container. FYI

... pay attention : when an oil is reformulated it's to suites the new requirements of car/truck manufacturers.
this means also that a new oil is normally more detergent than older's one

see for example the evolutio of acea e3 to e9

in my opinion :

ONLY FOR USED , MEDIUM HIGH MILEAGE ENGINES :

our old engines doesn't like an high detergent oil , so i would avoid syntetic (whic is the more detergent of the entire oil family) and i would avoid the new acea e7 e9 engine oil

i would run good mineral oil or semisyntetic oil (10w40) that in a cold areas can help to improve the lubrication during the start up

it's obvious that if you rebuild completely an engine then you can run syntetic or high detergent oil , but not 5w30 !

alwais sae xxW40 or xxW50

Just a curiosity : when i was 25 i bought my first bj40 , the PO was an old truck driver, he owned the 40 for 22 years and he alwais
put in sae 30 monograde engine oil for the winter and sae 40 monograde for the summer i still remember that engine which had 500.000 km when i sold it still running strong....

change oil often.... this is "the secret" !

So no specific recommendations? How about shell rotella? Mobil 1? I don't like castrol or mobil delvac

Any good 15W40 for normal temperatures. 10W40 if you need regular starting below freezing. Synthetic is pointless and expensive.

I don't think brand matters. Every oil available these days from a reputable supply will surpass that engines requirements.
