I have this terrible metal on metal clanking noise from the front of the motor when it is cold. After about 2 minutes of driving it is gone and will not come back until it is good and cold again. In most cases I have to let it sit over night to be heard. It has gotten louder in the last few days. One person that heard it said they thought it may be rod knock, but he is a satellite specialist, not a mechanic.

More details: only does it when cold, at idle or under throttle makes no difference. Very loud metal on metal noise that is somewhat erratic.

That is all I can tell you for now. I am going to see if I can make a video clip of it for you to all hear, but I am not sure if it will translate well over video or internet video. Guess we will see.

Could it be something as simple as a water pump going south? I forget if you de-vaned your smog pump or replaced with idler but maybe check that too? Have you tried a stethoscope on various components at the front of the engine?

Good luck. I hope it turns out to be something simple (and cheap)!

A oil analysis test will determine the extent of any ill doings in the lower end.......

Fan clutch?

Get a water hose or a doctor thingy:hillbilly: as mentioned...anyway cut the hose down and use it to isolate.....if you suspect rods/mains you can also listen with the hose placed on the oil pan

Fan clutch?

Now that would be FANtastic! :p

I could only hope that it would be something so simple. That would be a dream come true.

I am still going to go ahead and start purchasing the parts for my Vortec swap so that when they revert the smog laws back to mandatory smog test (like I heard they are going to do in January 09) I will be ready.

I would rather do cruise moab this year with my 2F and do the swap this summer when it is nice and warm in my garage instead of now when it is 20 degrees on a good day in there. :bang:

please let it be something simple. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. ;)
