What Did You Do with Your 80 This Weekend?

Made an appointment to get my front window replaced on my diesel 80, the shop is very familiar with Land cruisers and was referred to me by the local Land cruiser community.

So nice thing was when they called me to quote and to schedule a time they basically quoted four days just in case there's rust repair and the quote includes the rust repair

Got our retro inspired bumper back from powder coat and wired up the LED's.

That's certainly a lot nicer than the Safelite dbags who installed my new windshield right over untreated rust without saying a word.

I put one under the hood too...I figured that a big a$$ positive cable coming straight from the battery down to the front bumper could be a real hazard in a front end incident, either on the road or trail. I've found that with my wheeling and the habits of my trail friends is that I usually know if it's a good time to pop the hood and flip that switch before I get into a hairy situation where it may be needed. That said, there is no perfect solution, but just hoping to make mine a little safer where possible. I did do some research on running a hefty fuse/breaker in line in case of a short, but from what I found at the time, the shutoff switch seemed like the best option between the 2.
COS80, is right in that I need to protect that hose.

Installed a Dakota Digital SGI100BT device in the 80 Series for speedo correction.

I had a rough time finding the connection point in the driver door cowl, so I eventually drilled a hole under the center console and will hide the device under the transmission shifter cover.

Took a bit of tech help to understand what to do with the extra wires, but it's working fantastic now.

I know there's other devices from different manufacturers and people have their opinions, but this is what I wanted.

With just a little effort now, I can easily recalibrate my speedometer when I change tire sizes \m/\m/

New to me genuine alloys (came on Aussie Sahara trim) and new sneakers, and a decent wash. She scrubs up pretty well actually.

Awesome....I think your paying for the bracket-(the cost of the window rocket). The PCBAs are pennies on ebay.
Cable harness and ease-of-install too. I watched a YouTube install video. It's a good product, but the price is a bit over-the-top.

Tested flex up front. I removed the perry parts bumpstops up front because they were limiting up travel significantly (rears were perfect).

OEM bump stops are fine for now on 315s. I still have about 1-1.5" shock travel remaining when fully flexed, and a very small part of the flares need trimming, didn't need to hammer anything.

I thought I'd have more up travel! The only limitation I can think of is binding in the control arms and I'm hoping the delta arms will allow for a little more up travel. Sway bar was disconnected from the frame mounts.

Well did my last trans flush so I feel confident all the fluid is new now and started changing out sway bar components. The old rear links and bushings definitely have seen better days. Waiting on the rear bar bushing and the front sway bar links to finish it up.

After sway bars, I’m moving to u joints since I have them already and then suspension bushings and finally the shocks and springs. My 80 has lowering springs on it from Japan and I’m gonna go OME stock height for now.

After the Pig trip we, @cruiserinsanity and I, said no more towing with the 80. Then he found 1985 Ford F250, straight 6, with Warn 8274 in Knoxville. Only 300 miles away, but hey, it has a tow bar, that should work. We drive up and meet Mike the 81 year old man that's selling it. It cranks up great, the inline 6 has gobs of power, shifts good enough, kinda sloppy (transmission mount is not bolted up), no parking brake, brakes are kinda soft but grab at the bottom, brake MC may be leaking or not, no two tires match in brand or age, spare is rotten, and right front tire is cracked.

Prudence would say, "Just go home, leave this with Mike." Prudence missed out on the trip. Gavin works a deal and we hitch it up. Well, the short drive, never over 30 mph, tells me that tow bar towing will not work as the F250 was pushing the back of the 80 around, as bad as towing the Pig but with a different element of sketchiness. The short drive was to be to a Harbor Freight to pick up tow lights but I plugged an Ace Hardware into the gps instead. Short drive was very informative.

Where was Gavin and his girlfriend during this short drive? In the Ford working the brakes and lights. That's was one option we considered. Gavin sits the cab while the Ford is towed and works the lights.

Option 1 out. Option 2 find a tire store and purchase at least one good tire. It's now past 1600 hrs in Knoxville and stores are nearing their time of closing but we find a Discount Tire, two tires for $280, no deal. Firestone next door, one tire for a decent price and the counter guy was good to work with. New tire mounted up and we rolled back the 300 miles home. 16 hours on the road. Sorta of a mini-version of Roadkill Garage.

Didn't get to find a trail, but did take Monzo, my Stumpy Tail Australian Cattle Dog out for a walk near Birds Landing in Solano County California

Do you remember what those steering wheel buttons are? I bought a set to go with my Kenwood and after pulling the radio, I found they weren't compatible. I can't believe how hard it has been to find a way to pause a song without having to use a touch screen.

Here you go @jeremy j.... I've had them in for about 8 years. Thinking I've only changed the batteries once. They have a device that attaches to the back of your stereo that should be universal for all stereos with inputs for steering wheel controls.

I did the naughty thing and took off the horn cover and used a drill press to drill holes to embed the controls into the steering wheel

  • (EDIT; HAHAHAHHA I WAS SO NAIVE IT CAME BACK AFTER 50 miles) Cleaned my EGR valve, cleared code 71. Maybe it’ll stay gone now.
  • Discovered my TPS is not sending proper signal (I believe spec closed is 0.5v and WOT is 5v and I’m getting 0.05 to 1.6v which doesn’t seem right).
  • Discovered kickdown cable was super loose. Tightened it up and she shifts nice now… maybe a little too tight. Going to fiddle with it. It seems a little too eager to shift if I lift and then go back on the throttle (to cruising position, not flooring it).
I’m finally CEL free! (For now)
