What Did You Do with Your 80 This Weekend? (11 Viewers)

Mounted up some KM3’s today. Discount Tire had a coupon for an alignment at nearby chain but the technician told me he thought my alignment was fine and didn’t want to touch it. He also mentioned he hasn’t worked on a Landcruiser before.

Is this actually fine or should I visit a 2nd shop?

I was working on a few things yesterday and had the passenger front fender (and snorkel) off and I noticed these cracks. I assume from body flex and making contact with the snorkel inlet where is passes through here to the airbox.
I welded up the cracks and all is well again in the world. Might be worth checking on your own rigs although I'm sure it's not a certainty on every rig with a snorkel.

What kind of shape is your core support in at the front body mount? I've seen several rust enough to collapse slightly at/above the body mount and that would certainly put undue stress in the locations where your inner fender cracked. Also, if you trimmed the lower corners of the core support for clearance like many here do, that could be the cause too if it isn't properly reinforced. Or, I suppose it could be the body mount itself failing. Very unlikely in my opinion that it had anything to do with the snorkel - just a coincidence there I bet.

Don't forget to weld up that other crack in the bottom right hand corner of that opening in your pictures... ;)

Good suggestion. I'll check the core support but it all looked good when I replaced the body mounts a couple years ago. Worth checking again to be sure. I have trimmed the lower corners of the core support, so I suppose that could have contributed.

Camber and caster aren't something that they (typical alignment dude) can adjust, so they are what they are. The toe-in looks fair-ish, so I don't know that it's worth messing with either - especially if you're a lazy alignment technician! As long as your steering wheel is straight and it drives well, I'd say you're good to go.

Alignment specs aren't affected by new tires, so if your old tires were wearing OK, then I'd be even less worried about any of this.

You can adjust toe at home. There are some threads on here about it. Camber, nothing to do there. Caster, you need caster bushings, new mounts or new radius arms like a Delta VS radius arm. So yeah they can't do much except adjust toe.

New tires look great! Fit ok with mudflaps?

You think his caster is "good to go"? lol
First off, I never said the caster was good to go - I said it wasn't adjustable by the alignment tech. Is it perfect? Of course not. Is it ideal? Still no. But, it is still positive, which is better than a lot of lifted 80s can say. Plus, the OP didn't sound concerned about the way it drives, and hasn't mentioned how the last set of tires was wearing so I'm assuming it's OK in both of those categories. All he did was get new tires - nothing that affects alignment was changed. So yes, I'll stand by by "good to go" comment. lol.

He posted up his alignment specs and you replied with “good to go”.

It’s half arsed as a forum mate, no better than the incompetent alignment tech, to not tell the dude your 80 will be much more enjoyable 100% of every time it’s being driven by turning red to green with some caster correction.

That’s good to go in my books. Just my $.02. 🤷🏻

Installed the ToyotaMatt windshield washer bottle with new front/rear pumps. Took way longer than planned because I had to tear apart the inside looking for a clog in the rear line. Finally found it at a junction underneath the bottle jack. Pumps work great!

I've been chasing a suspension noise that I get when braking and I'm stumped. Could really use some feedback. I've checked and tightened the shock, replaced all the sway bar bushing, and replaced the tie rods & ends (all necessary maintenance in any case).

The clunking persists. A year ago it was really rare, but at this point it's every time. If I brake very slowly, no sound. If I brake like normal it makes the sound every time. It's something with the weight transfer. After stop, when I reverse and stop it make a similar but much quieter sound.

I stared a thread in Tech (Suspension clunking / noise on braking - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/suspension-clunking-noise-on-braking.1333641/) but haven't gotten any responses. Sorry for the cross post.

Check caliper bolts, wheel bearing preload?
Panhard rod bushings…

Slip yoke?

Washed some winter grime of the Land Cruiser. Did the same for the bicycles.
I love the reliability of a quality vehicle. Kind of like the 20 year old road bicycle I washed. Just racks up 1000s of miles and replace the wear items as needed. Should last forever.

Does the sound happen when you brake but don't push in the clutch pedal?

EDIT: Nevermind. You've got an auto trans.
