Front sway bar bushings

I have been able to some wrenching on the old girl that has been sitting in the garage the last 3 plus years. Six solid days working to get her back together. This weekend I spent the last two days "learning" to weld. Gained more respect for those who can lay a bead. Got "decent" by mid day today but certainly not anything to frame. In fact, best to grind down the evidence! Anyway, fabed up a bracket/shelf for my 4XLabs bumper. I will be installing so Baja Designs LP9s on the old girl. Had some help from Send Cut Send and ordering pre-cut parts based upon CAD drawings I supplied.

I bought the bumper on a group buy and had them weld it up for me. I am sure they rushed it out the door as it is not symmetrical and to get the shelf to lay right had to do some rather interesting things to make it work. The gap between the front hoop and the shelf was the worst part fiddling with it to make the best of it, you cant tell but looking from the front, it is on the same plane as the top of the hoop. For my first project with a welder, I am pretty happy with the way it turned out.

You can adjust toe at home. There are some threads on here about it. Camber, nothing to do there. Caster, you need caster bushings, new mounts or new radius arms like a Delta VS radius arm. So yeah they can't do much except adjust toe.

New tires look great! Fit ok with mudflaps?

Thanks! They clear just fine so far but haven't had a chance to flex the suspension. I think the PO installed caster bushings? They appear to be offset although hard to tell in this photo.

First off, I never said the caster was good to go - I said it wasn't adjustable by the alignment tech. Is it perfect? Of course not. Is it ideal? Still no. But, it is still positive, which is better than a lot of lifted 80s can say. Plus, the OP didn't sound concerned about the way it drives, and hasn't mentioned how the last set of tires was wearing so I'm assuming it's OK in both of those categories. All he did was get new tires - nothing that affects alignment was changed. So yes, I'll stand by by "good to go" comment. lol.

Lol, sorry to get things heated guys. I appreciate you all being great forum mates. :)

I did have a chance to check out my tires closer. This is around 4,000 miles of wear. The tread depth seemed pretty uniform across with a quick eyeball test. Should I now look into improving the alignment or should I just rotate the MT's every 3k?

Last but not least, had to go out and snap some photos last night.

I run 7 degrees of caster. Do i get a cookie?
No, you get uneven tire wear, a reduced contact patch, and your odds of sliding off a slick turn increase.

At least that is what Google told 🤣. I personally think bigger than oem tires should = more + caster than oem specs. So if your running 37"s than 7+ is probably perfect 😆

I've been chasing a suspension noise that I get when braking and I'm stumped. Could really use some feedback. I've checked and tightened the shock, replaced all the sway bar bushing, and replaced the tie rods & ends (all necessary maintenance in any case).

The clunking persists. A year ago it was really rare, but at this point it's every time. If I brake very slowly, no sound. If I brake like normal it makes the sound every time. It's something with the weight transfer. After stop, when I reverse and stop it make a similar but much quieter sound.

I stared a thread in Tech (Suspension clunking / noise on braking - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/suspension-clunking-noise-on-braking.1333641/) but haven't gotten any responses. Sorry for the cross post.

Control/ radius arm bushings. Pull the arms, vice then up, stick a pipe in the hole (this should be easy for any man), torque the bushings and watch all the cracks and tears in the rubber reveal themselves. Than go ahead and replace the bushings and no more noise.

Drove 3 hours to pick this up. 1967 M416 trailer with straight edges and fairly good condition.

Family of four with two dogs means space is limited. This will help so much and provides the possibility of a rooftop tent later when it's just me and the wife.

Rented a cabin in the mountains and went snowboarding for three days, it dumped 30”!

I turned 51 last week so am happy to still be able to ride and I came home with no injuries after three hard days. 😆

Cheers

haha, the light is still on but for a legit reason now, I'll likely pull the bulb the next time I'm in the dash. I've been meaning to remove it because it just struggling to brake in 4lo
When I pulled the abs computer in the foot well on the left the light turned off.

I still need to do that after my ABS / LSPV delete

Hope everything goes well with your surgery and recovery. Hope it's 1 and done. Good looking rig.
Thanks, and yeah, it was a "one and done" - I just have a cavernous hole in the back of my neck area for a while ;)

Weird when I deleted mine I pulled the computer also and my light is still on. Need to pull the dash and yank the bulb.

That's 100% the issue. Swapping everything next weekend.

Awesome! I have family in eastern WA who spend lots of time at Schweitzer and I try to get up there once a year or so. Beautiful area.

Wasn’t actually that far north but, ya it was good. 🤙

Cheers

Tested out the new tires (Toyo Open Country AT3 285/75/16) in the snow (lots of trips to the mountain and back recently). So far I'm very impressed with these tires, I have the same tires on my truck as well.

Also gave it a mid winter wash to get the road grime off. Having a hot water hose tap in the garage is so handy.
