Since this doesn't have anything to do with useful mods or improvements to our 99 Land Cruiser, I decided to start this thread on what we did to our LC this week. We gave it a makeover and modification that rendered it useless. My wife was heading to her sister's house with our two youngest for a swim, when a newly licensed teenager decided it was safe to take a left right in front of her. There was nothing my wife could do to avoid the inevitable, and she hit the crossing vehicle in the rear quarter and spun it out. She was traveling about 40 mph when it happened. The good news is that the LC performed like a champ and absorbed all of the impact. She didn't hardly feel the impact at all and my two kids said it wasn't that bad. My 10yo said that we've had worse bumps offroading.

So looking at the damage, the age and mileage, it appears that it might be a total loss. Our 100 has treated us very well over the past 3 years. We took it across the country twice. The last time across we hit 200,000 miles on the way home through Alabama.

We're looking to upgrade to an 03 or 04, if we can find one. Looks like we're going to have to travel to find one, since there's not much here in AZ. This is our family ride so we're looking for a stock one.

Here's the one picture I have on my computer.

Yikes! Glad everyone was okay.
Definitely go '03 or newer for the 5 speed, it is a huge improvement. We loved our '00 but the '04 is an entirely different animal.
There are lots of clean LX470s in Phoenix with relatively low miles (100-125K), most of them haven't had the 90K service so that is a good bargaining chip.

Yikes! Im sure the family felt safe in the big Cruiser - glad all is well.

Good luck in your search , your old beast has served you well. Agree with PBR, although the early 100's are great, youll find the newer models (03+) feel different.

I can just imagine it ....

First thought: "is everyone ok?!"

Second thought: "How soon can I start shopping for a new 100 series!?"

My third thought would be I wonder what the buy back would be? Unless the frame is messed up pretty I see some body panels. Fender, hood, grill and bumper. Totaled to a insurance company, to a body guy easy fix. Looks like all bolt on parts. Just to have the room while shopping for used parts.

I fixed my salvaged 80 that was hit in a similar fashion. What quickly added to the cost on mine was the power steering gear box (My sector shaft was sheared), relay rod, front axle housing (doesn't apply here but other parts on the front end could be messed up), suspension, etc... Check car-parts.com for used parts costs. I had better luck with autotrader to find my 04 locally than I did with craigslist.

If Im reading the post correctly the wreck LC (glad everyone is OK) has north of 200K:eek:
Let the insurance company have it. Why spend any money or time with a wrecked vehicle with 200K+. The last thing I would consider is going to all the trouble to do a swap with a drivetrain with 200K+.

2003 was the last year for the trans dip stick:(

The front end got pretty messed up. Sheared at the ball joint and the CV joint is a mess. I wonder if there is any front differential damage done with that wheel just flopping around. She coasted a hundred feet or so then was driven off the road to clear the traffic. All while that wheel was disconnected from the steering and turned in. The radiator was damaged enough to drain, and I can see a/c lines that were crushed. I did not get to open the hood to see the rest of the engine bay.

We're going to let the insurance have it. Like Phil says it has 210k on it. This is the family vehicle so we're looking to maintain the comfort and drive-ability that the stock version provides.

Buy a newer LX470 (03+) as the family truckster and then buy the '99 from the insurance company. Then swap the motor and trans into your 80!! The pre-ATRAC ECU will work perfectly!! Cue maniacal laughter...

It's a Land Cruiser so 200K doesn't mean it's on it's last legs. While I'm not sure I would transfer a power train with this many miles it does have one thing going for it, A known history. Personally I would fix the hundred. Last year the E-locker came into the US on a Land Cruiser. While the miles are high no longer being a DD and a mainly off road vehicle the years until the end of it's are going to be longer. While I love my Sequoia and fits my needs better I still miss my 2000 LC. If it wasn't too big for my wife we would have traded in our V8 powered 4WD 4Runner and kept the 100 series. Our 04 does not have the dip stick.:bang: Do like the five speed but not as much as the six speed and 5.7.

Didnt say it was on its last leg just pointing out the economic of the swap. That many miles to start does not work with my experience with swaps. My first swaps drivetrain had 500 miles on it and saw 175K more before it was parted out. My second swap Murf is driving and its a long way from 200K.

I looked into adding a trans dipstick to my 06 LC and it can be converted for about $175 IIRC.

Pray tell!! $175 to add a dipstick?

You right you didn't said 200K was on it's last leg. :hmm:

I think it's in reference to what it will cost to buy the whole truck from the insurance company just to pull the drive train for a swap. I wouldn't consider it either. You can probably get lower mile engine/parts for a lot less than the cost of buying the whole truck.

Come on you didnt think it would be free being Toyota:grinpimp:

New trans pan
IIRC the tube is 2 piece
A couple tube brackets
And O'course the dipstick

I figured with the fluid being 100K rated:rolleyes:
And if there is no fluid on the ground it does need to be checked anyway:eek:

Why spend the $$$

But with that said I still check all my fluids regularly ever with none on the ground in other vehicles:doh:

I have a 99 with a 150K and 75K of its my history Ill make you a deal on. Its a perfect candidate for a SAS, conversion, CampTeq, or just a driver.

No worries sometime I have a hard time being clear

 I'll be cooling off in the north country with a couple of pups if you head north.

It depends on how much they want for the thing. Advantage sometimes having a whole vehicle for a conversion. Running around finding small parts adds to time and money. Plus motor from a junk can be a gamble with unknown history. But guessing for a transplant it's cheaper going the GM route which is the most commonly transplant. For I would keep it only to fit it as toy/hobby vehicle, never to use as a DD again.

I think $175 doesn't sound bad for all involved. That said I'm beyong ocd about checking all of the fluids as well.
The more time I spend crawling around the rigs the more likely I am to notice something before it becomes an issue.
