Although I have owned a few of these it has been a awhile. My son turns 16 in just over a year. I wouldn't mind to have one to drive for a little while and we prefer to get him in a newer 80 series. We live in the mountains and want a safe reliable vehicle while in the winter but something he and friends can take into the mountains that would be reliable.

I have a 97 Anniversary edition about a mile away. It has high miles 256k all records from 70k miles. Small amount of rust around rear glass, a few small whiskey dents. It hs new radiator and will have new break pads on the front. Due to current brake job I didn't get to drive it. I intend on doing this Thursday. Is this in the ballpark of a $5000 rig? I intend on going through the records and seeing if the PHH as been replaced along with what else. I would also like compression test but not sure how I can get this done on my day off as we are limited to what we have here where I live.

6 is what I would sell my locked 96 for with 253k. Sounds like about the same shape.

My grandson took it to college. 200 miles each way.
29 below zero sitting outside when he went to drive back for the holidays. One of the very few vehicles that started

You gotta look outside of Colorado. The "Colorado Toyota Tax" is a killer...I've sold 3 80s in the last 3 years and I list them reasonably $$$$ wise in comparison to others listed on Denver Craig's for a good reason.

Here is one I drove 6 hours each way for in Souix Falls, South Dakota. Picked it up for $2800 or 3k with a one way rental car and fuel. There out there, don't be in a rush. This one has 200K, factory lockers, normal engine leaks and a little rust typical of east river but it's the nicest driving one I've had yet.

Good luck with your search!

Definitely not in a rush. Ive never paid more then $5500 for some darn good machines. However that was at least 5 years ago.

How did I miss that one? Recent purchase?

Your correct on that Colorado tax. Before moving to Colorado 4 years ago I would find them in Texas and Oklahoma.

Time doesn't allow me to search as much as I use to. I will continue to look when able and if something that's a great fit works out then I will pull the trigger. If nothing comes up for awhile then I will turn up the intensity this summer. That way the boy and I can make another man trip like we did when I purchased a 100 series 3 years ago. We had a ball driving from South Tx to Colorado in our 4 days.

Kinda hoping a reputable mudder will be unloading a good one in the near future.

I've been looking for about a month hard now. There are several good ones in Cali for 4-6k with at or below 200k miles. Some with records some without. But most don't have hg done or phh. However does seem you get what you pay for. Finding one with the 3x lock is difficult for less that 5500. At least this is what I'm finding.
Good luck.

The others I have owned had lockers for this amount in the past but things have changed for sure. However I'm not stuck on lockers I'm really just looking for the 4x4 for the son.

I'm kinda focusing on the midwest and south initially. There is quite the difference on pricing between where I live now and where I use to live.

80 series price went up in the last 2 years and it seems that the bargain Cruiser right now is the 98,99,00 100 series.I was looking on the Boston Craigslist just for s***s and giggles and have seen several 100 series starting from 3k, sure they might have some rust but a teenagers first car usually dies before rust become an issue ;)

I remember I had many mecanical failures happening on my first few cars and of course I never was to blame it ;)
