What can a '97 LX450 really tow? (1 Viewer)

Here in the UK you can legally (must stay below 50mph) tow 3500kgs (7700lbs) with a LC. I have towed that a few times ok.

I tow a 19ft flats boat at about 3000 lbs on a regular basis. You don't go anywhere very quickly but that doesn't happen without the boat. With the OME sock height no sagging, but overall except for braking you can't really tell too much differance.

Does the trailer have to be enclosed? With the coin you spend on an enclosed trailer, you can have a really nice aluminum car hauler and not have to worry about leaving stuff at home. You also wouldn't have to worry nearly as much about cross winds making things interesting.

Thank you for all the information.

Cheap40 - At this point it has to be enclosed as it will be a make shift garage while our house is under construction.

The StallionQ8 - What would you say the weight of the boat and trailer was? Same year vehicle, if you can handle that it seems for the short trips I would make I should be alright.

Arya Ebrahimi - Hokie from '03. Thanks for the input, what airbags would / have you used?

Paul_Humphreys - Thanks for the note. I think I saw something you had written some time past, and that is what got me thinking that I could use the Lexus rather than buying another truck.

Land_Cruiser_Phil - Do you think if it is short distances and the speed is kept at under 50 I should be alright? That was my real concern would be wind. I wouldnt do much towing in the winter so I should be ok on that front.

Its tough to think that I would drop another 12K on an Excursion that I would use for 3-4 trips a year to move around this trailer. But, at this point, it might be the best bet, as I would like to take the vette down from Richmond to Myrtle Beach , SC every year. Dont think traveling that distance with the LX would be wise.

Thanks for the input all. I think after the following questions are answered we can call this a shut case.

good conclusion. get a beater 3/4 ton and you will get a lot of use out of it

x3, I'd get a diesel (Cummins or Duramax. No PowerBroke)

Or, if you lived outside of the states, find a HDJ80 (1HD-T Turbo Diesel :grinpimp:)

I have towed Porsche 911's (newer ones) on a aluminum trailer (the same one NCR gives its vote to) and the cruiser will tolerate it and with a braked trailer and a brake controller it will stop but your heart will be in your throat and you'll need a change of underwear if its an emergency stop! If your gonna do this regularly I would look towards another vehicle if you are gonna be a regular tow person like an f 250 diesel or a dodge cummins 2500
If you are going to use the cruiser for towing the vette i would plan on doing a tranny flush very often with a high quality fluid.

corvette10, no idea on the airbags, I just know I'd need more support in the rear to haul cars regularly and I've heard people talk about them on here before. :D

I'm a class of '08 alum, was supposed to be an '05 alum, but Blacksburg was too much fun ;) :D
