Red tops in all 3 of mine lovem only replaced 2 in ten years ... guess I'm lucky

So what size battery are you guys installing ? And are you running the marine deep-cycle? Need to go get one tomorrow...

Happy Turkey Day!

Dont run Marine (deep cycle) unless its for an aux. battery.

Why's that? I love the blue top I have in my truck. Starts the engine wicked fast.

Anyway, I was told that the blue top has the same internals as the yellow top with a different case ( aux terminal locations )

Typical wet cell deep cycle batteries are not able to deliver high starting current like a wet cell starting battery can. Optima's and later Odyssey's are blurring that line. Both of them offer a deep cycle battery that can dump high current for short periods. Probably not as much current as a true starting battery, but more than a traditional deep cycle battery.
Note that there aree two versions of the Optima Blue top. those with a light grey case and those with a dark grey case. As I recall one is specifically a deep cycle and the other is a combined deep cycle/starting battery, and I don't remember which is which though I will guess that the dark grey case is the 'pure' deep cycle.

Generally I still wouldn't do it, but it does work. The worst case is that the battery won't live as long, or that you're down on starting current and that won't matter until it's really cold.

So I'm planning on getting the Sears Platinum P-1 group 34

:)

Any advantage (or disadvantage) to getting the style with side terminals? I thought I read a thread where someone cautioned against it ?? Was that you, Joey?

Just curious - Do you need a special Battery Charger for AGM batteries ?

I purchased the above Sears premium and just want to maintain it until installed. Fully charged now at 12.99 V

Two Optima Blue tops, four and half years old with no signs of weakening. Voltage with my 62 not running, is higher than the days after I installed them. (After they were charged up)

No, AGM's do not require a special charger

When I purchased my batteries, Optima recommended them for heavy load vehicles such as Police, Fire and Medical vehicles as well as start batteries in same.

AGM's, like Optima's and Odyssey's, do want to be charged differently than typical lead-acid batteries when you're bringing them up from a deep discharge. I would advise searching that topic as I do not know what is best. I have been told that the slower the better, but please don't take that as gospel because I've no sureness that it is.

Timely topic for me. Last week it dropped to around 10 degrees and starting was difficult. Luuckily the betery had JUST enough reserve and the FJ fired up. This week it is supposed to be similarly cold and I want to replace the battery with one that will provide sufficent cold cranking power for those times when it doesn't fire up the first time.

Suggestions? By the way, my 85 fj60 is bone stock.
