Picked up a 1980 Fj40 a couple weeks ago.

Brief history, the rig spent all but the first 3 years of her life in Az. where I found her. She has 135k orig miles and is in really good shape. she was not run much at all for the last 3yrs

Problem is...When cold starting..I use choke..till she begins to rev high then ease the choke in and most times she dies...if not begins to stumble. If she dies must be rechoked to start. Even if run for some time...still needs to be choked to restart.

Im thinking....intake leak..maybe carb needs rebuild...maybe both ????

I'm leaning towards the carb rebuild. Even if it isn't the issue a rebuild will be beneficial and you would likely not regret it

Intake leak is a definite possibility... widen that to vacuum leaks. I used WD-40 to find mine.

good luck, welcome, and post up some pics of your find.

I have an 81 FJ40 that sat around a while and it had both. Intake leaks and vaccuum leaks. Plus the carb needed a rebuild. Runs like a champ now.

It's definately lean on the bottom.Use starter fluid or simular spray around your intake when the motor revs you found your leak. Will work for the vacume leaks also.Is it the factory carb? I had an adaptor plate come loose, took me for ever to figure out.

make sure all of the vacuum hoses are connected properly.

Make sure the Choke Opener solenoid is connecting properly, etc.

Make sure the BVSV valves are not installed backwards. There should be a green one on the side of the carburetor.

Have a look at the choke mechanism - at the carb linkage when the choke is pulled out or pushed in.
There is a screw that adjusts how much "throttle up" occurs when the choke is pulled on.
Just back off the screw untill the RPM sounds right when the amount of choke is optimum for cold start and smooth cold running.

It may take several tweeks to get it just right.
This is the way it works on a 2F with no emission crap - good luck for the easy fix

Well, when I say cold start....we are in San Diego...so we'll call it cool/.....not hot start.
And California is the KING of Smog crap

1.What's the fuel level in the sight glass?

2. What is the spark plug color/condition?

Just a hunch.

Best
