any ideas? hard top holes.webp
hard top holes.webp

I highly doubt they're holes from the factory....do they go all the way through? Maybe a grab handle if someone wanted to stand on a bumperette to access the roof rack (both of which are no longer there). Just a guess.....

don't remember if they went through, i don't think they did. welded, grinded and smooth as a baby's butt now. Just second guessing myself as i look back on pics of when i got it and the holes i got rid of.

PO had a mirror mounted there so they could see how much room they had left when backing into a parking space?

Ok, i figured it was most likely a PO jerry rig of some sort. Do all the clips mean it was a soft top model?

Not necessarily.....there's a recent thread about ways to determine if your rig was a FST....do a search for it.

Probably not. It would have a drop down tailgate.

yeah, i read it. Didn't have any of those parts they said to look for, but i do have a ton of clips so I thought I'd ask.

If you talking about the footman loops on the rear corners of the tub those were standard on 72 thru 74 models both hard top and soft top. Unless I'm mistaken your would be a 72 right?

Correct, it's a 72, production date 12/71. Why did they have the footman loops that year? Did they sell the soft top as an option you could buy for running both hard and soft?

I would think the holes were from a ladder I see them mounted on JDMs

It was an option of running the the other top on a FJ40 from the mid sixties. In 72 they took it a step further until 74. Then in 78 Toyota dropped the soft top model in the US. Some of the 72-74 had the soft top dash light for the soft top on they hard top model. Was your's one of them?
