Hey, just wondering what aftermarket tachs people are using for their 40 series that use a 2h engine (or maybe it doesn't depend on which engine). I've got an HJ47 landcruiser, 1981, so pretach era, but would like to know what my rpms are. Oh, forgot to mention, would prefer something that doesn't require wiring.
Thanks!

I'm not sure where you are going to find a tachometer that doesn't require at least some wires.

I used a Tiny Tach on my 3B and it worked great. They just have a clamp that goes on one injector line, then a positive and a negative wire to hook up. Pretty easy. Diesel Tiny-Tach | Design Technology, Inc., Home of Tiny-Tach

You should consider the factory tach for your truck.

That would be the ideal and maybe at some point. By "factory tach," you mean the one that went in the '82 models and later? I've got one in the '82 I have and they are nice.

Yes that’s the one. It will be a much simpler installation. Another option would be a Dakota Digital dash with the Diesel Tach module using the stock pickup sensor. That’s what I’m running on my 12HT in my 78’ 45 lpb.

Thanks. I'll take a look.

76FJ40, you mean one like this: 1962- 84 Toyota FJ40 VHX Instruments

If that's the one, what was involved with the installation?

There is some straight forward wiring and a couple of sensor changes. Then there are a couple of calibrations to be performed that the instructions will walk you through.

Plus one on the tiny tech. I love it. Get the one that is back lit. It’s a piece of cake to install.

I've got the Tiny Tach in my Chevy pickup and I love it. As already said, it is real easy to hook up. It will also work on anything from one cylinder to multiple cylinders since it uses a sensor clamped to an injection line. It is digital so it will read in 10 RPM increments.

Thanks for the added vote of confidence, Don. I'm going Tiny Tach. Just waiting for my new credit card billing cycle to start. :) (Last month's been a money sucker). I just need to find out the diameter of the injection lines on an HJ47.
