Really....

Started off ok enough; just lacked up the family went to lunch and started our trip home from the beach.

Usually we head up 331 to Montgomery and 65 home but to day I decided to follow our Gps. I didn't even really pay attention to what roads were were on. The gas light came on just as we were getting out of defuniak springs and I thought Ill stop at the next station (I figured I had a good 25 miles before I was really empty). Well the next one was closed and before we made it to the next we ran plum out.
I found a bit of shade before the truck came to a stop and noted that there was a what looked to be a semi shop just up the road. I hopped out and asked my wife to hang tight, then walked up to the shop luckily it was open. Thanks to Paul who gave me a lift to the next station and let me use his can we were back on the road in about 20 minutes.

Then a 100 yards from our exit the alternator light come on. I think to myself, that's odd, and happen to glance at my scan guage; I notice the temp is at 202. As I come off our exit interview see it go from 202 to 204 then 208 and before I know it its 215, 220 up to 235 by the time I stop at the end of the ramp. I immediately turn for the gas station a half block away and pull into the first spot I see, by now my temp is screaming past 267.... (that's the last reading I saw) I shut the truck down and looked under the hood....... My fan, clutch, and pulley decided to separate from the engine!

So called AAA and got my sister in law to deliver the outback to us.

Really one of the luckiest unlucky days if my life.

First run out of gas in the middle of nowhere but right in front of a shop open on a Sunday. If
Then to have my fan come off at my exit instead of in the middle of nowhere.

Think maybe because it wasn't a 3FE?
Sorry for the bad luck today. But damn, You were at the beach with the fam! That had to be fun!

Always is...
It worked out a lot better than it could have and in the grand scheme it wasn't a bad day at all.

Sent u a text a bit ago didn't see this until now. Wow, my wife would not have handled running out of gas very well at all then multiply that by the alt 86'ing too much!

But ur gonna be armored up!

I just hope I didn't do any real damage to the ole FZ.
That temp climbs really fast when you don't have a fan or water pump.

Lucky Lucky Lucky! My radiator took a s*** on me 2 weeks ago RIGHT when I pulled in the driveway. I think I got rid of a few neighborhood cats too :)

I don't know what happened exactly. I know I had one broken stud, one stud that backed out or was pulled out, and some missing the nuts. Of course the when the fan came off it went into the radiator and took out the shroud. The radiator didn't puncture but it's pretty beat up I'm betting it will need to be replaced. So I'm into a fan, shroud, radiator, and water pump. I just don't know what else might have happened.

I feel your pain. First FJ60 that I bought had a failing water pump and I put off fixing it. While on a trip to Ocala, FL the water pump shaft let go, ripped up the radiator, and trashed the fan. This took place along I-75 near Micanopy, ca. a mile S of the exit and just about dusk on a drizzly September day. I had to hoof it up the interstate about a mile to the exit leaving my wife and our then 1 year old in the Cruiser. The FL interstates are spooky enough and being on foot is not something I'd recommend. In the end the repairs took about 2-3 days because the gas station had to order parts, and totaled about $1000. But at least the head gasket did not blow nor the head crack.

I know that road WELL. That stretch between Defuniak and Opp is Desolate. Especially on a Sunday evening. It coulda been a whole lot worse. Glad you made it home OK.

Ya'll bess stay up outta my wiregrass!

That sucks. Sorry to hear that. I'll help wrench on it if you need help, you did play taxi for me.

I have a fan, shroud, and radiator pulled and in the storage shed.

posted with my thumbs.

I got a new water pump coming hopefully get it on tomorrow.
I'm thinking about bolting up the fan and driving it with out a shroud for a while to make sure nothing else is wrong.
I straightened out as many fins as I could on the radiator and when I turn the electric fan on I can feel a good bit of air moving.
I'm not sure if the stock fan and shroud will work for me (dang supercharger biting me in the button again).
I know folks have used others (such as Tacoma fans) ; I just need to do some more research to see what will work.
For the long term I will replace the radiator whether it leaks or not (just has too any bent fins).
I already have issues keeping it cool in the summer while wheeling (supercharger).

Any of you fancy 80 guys want to buy a supercharger?

Any chance you can stuff a radiator with more thermal capacity in there? Deeper front to back, or just plain larger?

I know this seems too easy... but I know folks who've adjusted their fan shrouds and it's brought temps down.
Silly dude showed up a the Crusier Crawl one year WITHOUT the shroud... he couldn;t wheel. I suggest putting it back on while you're in there. It's definitely needed.

It's in about 15 pieces.

Yeah... It seems that a 3fe fan, shroud, and radiator is the way to go..
