First post, longtime lurker- hi everyone :)

I was getting tired of seeing the original finish on undercarriage wearing away, and the bits of surface rust that had popped up. Nothing serious, but wanted to prevent rust from spreading as much as possible. Have friends who had good experience with Eastwood products so I went all-out. I pressure washed everything, blew out the frame with compressed air, internal frame spray, rust converter, pre prep, and encapsulator platinum. Took forever but I’m really happy with how it turned out and it has been holding up well. Still considering using the chassis black top coat, but Eastwood said it isn’t necessary since platinum is really tough and it is UV stable. The silver is kind of growing on me, will topcoat if I have a change of heart.

Short of moving that does qualify as all-out.

Any extra consideration for the rear brake backing plates? Or remove the rear bumper to hit the hitch area? Seem to be common problem areas.

hahah😂 yeah moving wasn't an option so this will have to suffice for now. I did the hitch itself, and everywhere that you can see with the spare tire out, but I figured I would wait till I (eventually) install metal rear bumper to finish that area. As for the rear brake backing plates, those are next on my list. Thankfully they are in pretty good shape at the moment.

That looks fantastic! How many hours do you think you spent on this task?

Much appreciated! Honestly it took a really long time but all the posts about rust made me want to do something proactive, since this car is effectively my child. I did a lot of research/talking with people more knowledgeable than myself on which products to get and settled on Eastwood's offerings. Super rough estimate on times were:
  1. Compressed air through the frame: 1 hour
  2. Pressure washer: 2 hours
  3. Internal Frame Spray after everything dried: 4 hours, 48 hours to cure
  4. Steel brush surface rust: 2 hours
  5. Scuff areas without rust: 4 hours
  6. Rust Converter spray: 3 hours, 48 hour cure
  7. Pre Prep Spray everything: 4hours
  8. Brush rust encapsulator Platinum: 12 hours
  9. If you don't want silver finish, scuff again after 48 hours and top coat.
It was also a PITA since I don't have access to a lift so I had to use rhino ramps and a floor creeper. Some areas are simply impossible to reach, but Eastwood says apply it where you can, if you can't see a place it's less likely that the original finish is wearing off and getting exposed to too much rust.

You’re making me feel a bit better about my long weekend spent sprucing up the factory coating…

Eastwood rust encapsulator and chassis black top coat for any of the less than stellar factory finish bits. Then I put on some cerakote ceramic trim dressing for another layer of protection and crud-shedding.

One heck of a first post! If I drive out to S.F. will you do mine? :bounce:

Did you take any "before" photos?

That looks amazing! How has it been holding up for you? Might need to grab some of that ceramic coat...

I only did this round a month or so ago, so I don’t have too much time to show.

I’ve used cerakote on the black plastics on my 4Runner, and they’re still looking fresh a couple years later. I also did a quick pass on the back of the axle on the 4Runner as a trial and it held up and washes much easier than the rest of the frame.

I’m currently in the middle of applying the 4 horsemen of the rustpocalypse (pre, rust encapsulator, chassis black & cerekote) to the entire 4Runner undercarriage, now.

You said something about the thought of crawling under another truck making you ill… 😆

Did you remove parts to coat, or just use plastic sheeting or something else to cover up from overspray, etc?
I only used spray for the rust converter and the prep product. I didn't use any spray for the encapsulator, everything was painted on by brush. I removed the skid guards, as well as the front wheel well panels so I could better access the frame. I also removed all the frame plugs (I broke a lot of them so i had to order replacements)
