I'm helping a friend work on a 1HDT that recently started making a clicking noise at idle. He sent me a video clip of the harmonic balancer and it was clearly wobbling on the crankshaft. Uh oh.

We got around to disassembling the pulley over the weekend and found not-so-inconsiderable carnage. Apparently whoever was last working on the front of this engine did not reinstall the washer under the crank pulley bolt (WTF, over). The threads on the crank bolt were badly galled too - either because it was cross threaded when started and then rattle-gunned down or because the bolt bottomed out, I don't know...
What is certain is that without a washer, the bolt bottomed out before tightening against the pulley. Also, without the appropriate 362 ft/lbs of clamping force, the loads were transferred to that little woodruff key. Oh boy.

Well, here's the result:

I have a new bolt, washer, and woodruff key in my spares box (don't ask why) and you can see how thick that washer is. ....and how much of that woodruff key got smashed as the pulley began working itself loose(r).

Crank needs to come out and be taken to a good machine shop. I've seen people cut a new keyway 180 degrees from the original, but the timing marks will then be off.

The threads in the crank should clean up easily with a tap.
