i'm going to poke around with the arc welder that we found at the shop the other day. it works. but i've never welded before. got mask and all. how do i start off. just want to lay some beads... any tips?

First off read this:
https://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=107393

Just get some scrap.
Make sure you know what you are doing as far as grounding etc.
Details on the welder and material.
Sounds like you taking stick not mig.
Use stick diameter that is alittle less than your stock you are welding.
Stike away.

Don't practice on galvanized or plated pieces of steel. The fumes can kill you.

BUT, if all you have IS galvinized to play around with, make sure you have a fan going to take away the fumes. I weld Galv all day long, BUT we have helmets with the fresh air option AND some Industrial sized fans in the booth to clear the air. Just use common sense and you'll be ok. Al

Alz Toy,

Have you seen or used a mig gun with built in vacuum inlet that grabs fumes right at the weld?
I've only heard that there is such a thing, but wonder how it could work without screwing up the shield gas.

My post above wasn't meant to say that welding plated metal can't be done. I just like to inject the thought into the thinking of new welders so they'll realize that a danger exists and find out how to act accordingly.

yep no galv, all just mild steel i've got lying around (some scrap tube the boss used for sliders, some flat bar from my shackles.). grounding? i.e. clamp from the welder onto the material being welded, or the metal table the stuff's sitting on?

can't wait to finish my knuckle rebuild, then i'll get some time to play with the welder. already got 2 projects that i want to do. fill in the tail light holes on the bumper of my 40, and make some tube fenders.

Ive got two welding certifications one all position stick and one all position FCAW.. the vacuum in the mig gun handle is mainly used with industrial Flux core arc weld process (FCAW). the amount of Co2 that is directed around the electrode and weld is very high..and the vaccum seems to do its job well although the system is kind of cumbersome and it makes the whip really heavy. the only thing that blows the shielding gas away is a strong sidewind and when that happens you have to gouge out alot of metal as the fcaw process deposits more weld metal than any other welding technology. in my personal experience, learning how to stick weld first.. made learning how to mig weld alot easier, and then learning how to tig weld even less of a learning curve. welding is one of the best skills you can have and having a good teacher helps alot!

Follow this one also. Alot of information was passed to me on this one.

Everything from how it is supposed to sound, to the speed and heat settings.

This has to be the best investment I have ever made, and almost too much fun.

Sorry Honk for the late response. But to answer your question, no I haven't. The machine I use at work is an old Miller CP 200 ( quit making them around 25 yrs ago, just to give you an idea how high tech/leading edge mentalitiy where I work ), but its a good machine. Al

spooky, i tried today, it was great fun. i ran out of things to weld. don't think my welds are much good yet

As an amateur welder, anybody got any good forum suggestions? Any good links on general techniques? Thanks for the info.

i'll get the info next time i'm in the shop. i didn't write it down i was having too much fun.

although now my spring plate is attached to my steering damper mount, which is attached to my recovery hook...

Don't let the Hobart title bother you. All kinds of welders are owned and discussed by the users and it's a very friendly place - especially to new weldors.
Good forum.
