Being that i'm new to welding, this may not have been the best way to begin, but i built a weldernator into my fj60 with lots of help from this website, and it powered my first beads(if you could call them "beads").
The welder:

The control box and quick connects:

The first couple beads. ever(hey now.)

built some cables out of #4 jumpers. half the shielding, perhaps, but for a poor man, they work. So far, I have only practiced a little, and done some light hard facing (get it?) on my manual window regulator to get it to do my bidding. No work space and few tools(not even a vice) prevent me from doing much more than that, but i am an addict, preemptively(ask the GF). sad that I did this before even changing the fluids. bad. i know.
laters,

Where do the big wires plug in?

One goes to the Pos. terminal on the alternator(Delco-Remy 100A)
and the other is grounded to the alternator mount. Field power runs through a couple resistors to the #1 blade on the alternator and is controlled by the switch box. quick connects allow for easy polarity reversal. 100% Duty Cycle!

Would you please throw some pics up of that?

Here is the alt. sorry this isn't a better pic. just what i had.

and here is a fantastic rendering of my control box, ala paint:

The information on jon's page was/is pretty clear, even for a knownot like me. I used gardening wire to tie the resistors to the metal plate as a heatsink, once i figured out that they got hot enough to melt the plastic. one of the alternator's brushes should be grounded to the case by design, and though i may not have had to, I grounded the alt to the closest hole in the wheelwell. I used the pulley closest to the engine to give me the highest drive ratio, and I have burn through problems on thinner stuff at low rpms, so plenty of power from this GM alt. hope that answers your ?s. -F

Did you put the 2nd alternator in place of the AC compressor? and did you use the inside track on the dual pulley. looks like it is on the inside pulley. i am trying to do the same. what bracket did you use to mount the alt. to the ac spot?
