thanks for all of the advice everyone. i'll keep working on it, and i'll try it with the root-gap/bevel, bevel/land, root/bevel/root/root, leveb/toor-pag.

i've been poking around amazon.com as well to get some literature on the subject. i'll also check out some welding/fab sites.

still waiting for an answer on the bead width question.

My .02 cents, Listen to wile I have some welding experience (pipe) and wile knows what he's talking about. The books and lit are nice but if you can take a basic night school welding course in your area you'll be much better off??

Good luck and post more clean pic's of the welds, so the experts can advise

My .02 cents, Listen to wile ... wile knows what he's talking about.

Holy crap! Thanks for the props, but I'm just another hack 'e-expert'. My info comes from books, a little torch time of my own, and a little listening to my older brother's 30-odd years as a boilermaker/pipefitter, general fab/erection,(yeah, I said it) w/ all position TIG/MIG & blah blah certs. :hillbilly:

I only spent 10 years in the plate steel business (Chicago Bridge & Iron). Worked in design, manufacturing, and construction. Welds are designed and welded with gap in most cases requiring full penetration from one side, such as pipe welds. To say that it can't be done just isn't true. Butt the welds and you'll get a partial penetration weld.

Please, somebody prove to me that a 1/8" gap while welding 1/8" thick metal will give you a perfect joint.

NO s*** you need a gap, but what the hell do you think happens when you saw cut two pieces and butt them together? You get contact on a few points.

My original objection was to the giant gap recommended to the OP.

He obviously wants to use tube and if he attempts to make good joints that fit snugly together, there will automatically be a gap.

If this guy is going to CNC all the joints, then he can design in the .03 or less gap that is preferred.

Maybe we should start a welding debate thread where we can all toss around our education and experience.

 and  to my mudder friends.

Nat, you are right, a 1/8" gap on some 1/8" plate is a bit on the extreme side ;)

But, you also said "Do not gap your joints"

Gap is fine and "proper fittment" It just has to be a bit less than 1/8" for 1/8" metal..

if you're going to weld pipe, then you're going to have open butt joints. that is just the way it is period. that is the way pipe joints are properly fit.
does he need to do that for a cruiser project? probably not.

nat,
yes the "cleanest tig welds" are just fused, but that is done for a sanitary reason, not strength. they may be the cleanest, but a fused joint is also the weakest joint.
it's known as process welding, sanitary welding, purge welding.......
the food industry is full of it.
if you have a crack left in a joint, s*** will grow in it, and bacteria in food is almost always bad
