This is the third time I have done this weld and it's really driving me crazy.

I am getting this high crown on the weld as in the pic here.
The shackle hanger is a RuffStuff hanger and it's 1/4" material, getting welded to 1/4" plate that.

My welder is a MillerMatic 175 and it's at the setting for 1/4" material as is in the chart on the door for .030 wire w/ gas (wirespeed 70, heat 10).

I keep getting this high crowned weld. Should I drop the wirespeed and go slower?
Do I just need more heat?

did you bevel the hanger so you had a bit of a valley in there?

and is your collet right up against the corner? ( as in touching frame and hanger) you might want to turn gas up a bit as well as slow down wire speed a bunch and get the collet right over the weld so you basically have to be looking down the hanger at a 10deg. angle. from the rear of hanger vs side.

James, I burn hotter overhead. Teaching overhead is hard for guys to understand... So say its just a flat weld upside down, but there is much more to it. THE MAIN THING IS GRAVITY!

1st thing is to get where you are comfortable (as you can be..) and you CAN SEE the joint, your nozzle and keep your stick out acceptable for the settings. 2nd pay attention to the puddle. You HAVE to manipulate it more overhead, just like with vertical up welds. I would recommend you use a "C" pattern and hold the puddle at the top longer.

Get a couple pieces of scrap and get the settings where you are happy.

Wish I was closer, I'd run over and help you out.

I usually run slow wire speed compared to the miller chart .. much more if it's overhead or vertical .. but hey I'm just a newbie ..

Like reeveci states, hotter and faster with a bit of manipulation. Overhead under a rig can be challenging if you don't find a comfort zone and prevent a hot shower.

Weld under you ( or at least mine ) rig ( rig on floor or jackstands ) can be very challenging ( at least for me ) due to the space, to support your hand, move your face / helmet with tight space around etc .. on top of that there is the " shadows " you have under your rig ..

I wound up TIGing it. Not the prettiest stack of dimes, but considering I could watch the ARC penetrate the base materials, I have good welds here. Stacked 5 beads up on each joint. I will get a pic later.
