Hello everyone!

I’ve been dealing with this noise for a while now both my toyota master tech friends of mine as well as my buddies shop can’t seem to diag this noise.

So here it goes. I had the head gasket done as well as head a year ago by a very reputable TLC shop that works on all of my TLC’s.

The noise started about 5k miles after that work was completed. I have to say it’s like a bad alternator or a bad tensioner sound. I am going to attach a video with sound that I took today to this post so you all can hear exactly what the noise is.

Now when they were inside the engine I had them check everything out and told them to replace whatever needed to be replaced, they did and all was a fresh as can be under there.

When I turn the wheel the noise goes away which leads me to believe that it’s something related to the steering pump. However the steering pump was replaced. The oil pump was replaced and all internals were good.

I had my mechanic replace the alternator and the noise was still present, never changing. I was told by the toyota techs that it was possibly the internal oil gear or steering gear attached to the cam?

So here I am with a truly awesome truck that runs like a top with a ton of power and on top of that has new suspension, axels and everything in between, and it’s a Cali truck so no rust at all!

What can this be?

I attached the video as an iCloud link. So not sure if everyone can see this. Please let me know

Your link does not work, the gear on the power steering pump Is very sensitive surprisingly and can cause weird noises I would start there, they can be purchased new.

Has the PS system been bled properly as it sounds like there may be some air in the system.
I heard the audio and it does sound like the PS Pump but you can also run the garden hose with water over all the drive belts to see if its one of them or a pulley causing the sound

Forgot to mention all belts are new. The ac compressor belt was disconnected in that pic.

To bleed the steering system I have to jack the front up and turn the wheel when not running if I’m not mistaken correct?

I believe someone already did that but I will do it myself. There isn’t any air at all from what I can tell in the system (taking cap off of the PS Rez while truck is running).

What looks like very minor damage on the PS pump gear can make more of a racket than you'd expect.

I’m going to start with changing that gear out. Nothing seems to be affected by the noise and it goes away once I’m turning the wheels and alao Holding it at full lock
Be careful putting the new gear on the pump, have seen brand new gears that were held with something a bit too aggressive when they were being torqued that have ended up noisy as well.

Now when my shop did the head gasket did they have to touch that gear?

They shouldn't have had any need to remove the gear from the pump

You said the pump was replaced? So the shop would have had to transfer the old gear to the new pump unless they purchased a new gear also.

Oh sorry, missed this.
